Re-sits at uni

If you need to re-sit an exam is it usual to re-sit the same paper with the same question or is it usual to re-sit a new question?

RillaBlythe · 12/07/2012 17:08

New questions.

EduStudent · 12/07/2012 17:10

Def new questions.

FireOverBabylon · 12/07/2012 17:20

New questions, it's supoosed to be like sitting the exam again fresh. If you had the same questions, you'd have an unfair advantage over the students who took the original exam but didn't need to resit, as they wouldn't have prior knowledge of the questions.

Dropdeadfred · 12/07/2012 17:24

Definitely new questions. And if you ate re-sitting due to failing the guitar ( rather than being ill and missing it ) your score will be capped at 40% normally

puds11 · 12/07/2012 17:25

Yep it is new questions for sure, and your normally capped at a D-

Dropdeadfred · 12/07/2012 17:26

Failing the first one ( not guitar) - stupid iphone

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/07/2012 17:35

Thank you. I just wanted to check. DD is feeling mighty pissed off as she was one of the few candidates that sat through a very difficult exam (most of her year walked out) and completed the paper. She is going to put in a complaint but I didn't know if it was normal procedure, or not, to re-sit the same paper.

OP posts:
Dropdeadfred · 12/07/2012 18:47

Why did they walk out? That means they will need to re-sit too surely?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/07/2012 18:49

The question was 'too hard' according to DD.

OP posts:
hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/07/2012 18:50

*That was the reason given. DD said it was indeed a tough question but she stuck it out.

OP posts:
RillaBlythe · 12/07/2012 19:13

So dd wants to complain as they will get a new question? But they will be capped at pass rate.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/07/2012 19:38

No they get the same question and will get the same mark as some of the students who didn't walk out, that's what they want to complain about. They (the students who stuck it out and did their best) feel it is unfair for others to go into the resit knowing the question and having had several weeks to work on the answer.

OP posts:
Dropdeadfred · 12/07/2012 20:35

They won't know the question and your dd may have failed by 10% compared to those who walked out failing by say 30% but sorry, she still failed and it was her choice to try rather than give up, the fact that she still didn't know enough to pass was not affected by the others not knowing either ( and leaving early as is their right)

RillaBlythe · 12/07/2012 20:43

is DD sure about this? It seems very odd.

I might not be understanding though - I thought that DD had attempted a hard question & passed (with a lower mark I suppose). Others didn't attempt & are being offered a re-sit, of the same question & not capped? Is that right?

Dropdeadfred · 12/07/2012 20:45

I'm not sure if op's daughter passed or failed. But resist are not the same question and in these circumstances are definitely capped

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/07/2012 21:03

RillaBlythe-Yes. That's it. DD passed. She worked hard, sat the exam, struggled but passed. Others who did walk out are resitting the same question. This seems very unfair. I am not sure if they'll be capped or not.

OP posts:
creamteas · 12/07/2012 21:50

Does the year she is in count towards her degree?

If it counts, possibly worth contacting the student union if still unhappy.

But the best they could offer is a resit for her as well (with the first mark set aside) so if it doesn't count (or she doesn't want to resit) then not much point taking it further.

crazyspaniel · 13/07/2012 14:46

Are you certain they will be re-sitting the same question? I've worked in several universities and find it hard to believe that this could be the case, and also that the mark wouldn't be capped. If this really is the case, she should be asking for a resit too!

sashh · 16/07/2012 07:21

I am not sure if they'll be capped or not.

It will be capped to the lowest pass grade, be that a D or a %.

I have known the same question being asked, a different one, I've even known the situation where the exam paper is given to be completed with books / notes. But in the last case all the exam must be answered, even if the origional had optional questions.

In all cases the resit was capped.
