My second son has decided to move back to UK for college. Nothing fancy like Oxford or anything. But a local Technical college near my Mother to become a Policeman. Applications are all in. He's British but not having lived in UK for the last 3 years he doesn't get to apply for any of the regular loans that start paying back after you income reaches a set amount.
So I figure no problem, private student funding, loans to cover tuition, won't need paying back till he's done in 2 years. I can't find anything about this online. I think I find something then I go in a loop and find myself back reading about the government loans again. I need a little head banging icon.
We will move back to UK in 2013 and will make the payments for him, seeing we put out a ton of money for oldest son to go to Private Uni here in California. He's back in UK working in finance and I have him on the job of looking too.
But I figured the MN clan know all and have seen and been all between you. So is there such a thing as private funding? Am I pissing in the wind here or just looking in the wrong places and using the wrong search words?

Just been having a look for you myself (out of curiosity to be honest as never heard of private student loans).. but am coming up blank sorry. Will he be classed as an overseas student fees wise, or is it just the student loans he can't access?

I think it is likely you are going to have to stump up yourselves:( or do it via a standard bank loan. I can't imagine there is much of a market for private student loans given that anyone eligible in the UK is going to use the Student Finance System which is in place already.:(

He is charged as an overseas student due to not being there for 3 years even though he's a UK citizen. Pity we hadn't just moved to mainland europe not the US, they get to pay local fees in UK.
I've emailed my older son see if he can ask about and see whats available.
Can't do a regular loan as we won't be there till next Spring to make the payments for him. I'll be draining the savings.
Still even at £7200 a year, for 2 years, it's cheaper than the older sons Uni was here. But that was spread out payments over 4 years.
If anyone comes across any funding for this I'd appreciate a link.

Have you tried asking the college for advice ?
They might have experience of dealing with international students ?

CaliforniaLeaving · 06/06/2012 00:27

They did say he's considered International here's the price LOL. I have some people in UK working on looking for loans/grants/whatever they are called.
I bought his plane ticket the other day. I'm boo hooing about losing a another one to the world. One left, I'm not letting her grow up at all.
