when I looked into it, you had to be registered with the graduate psychology board (so a psych degree or at least a one year conversion), then a year of post-grad work with children/in schools, before applying for the three year doctorate (mix of clinical work & academic study). Seemed pretty intense & competitive (hundreds of prospective applicants attending the London-based open days that I went to).

Incredibly competitive. Most people with psychology degrees end up doing something completely different after graduation, because there is a massive oversupply of psychology graduates in the UK.

My sister has a funded place on the doctorate so it is definitely possible, she was a teacher beforehand though.

Lapofthegods, I'm an SEN teacher at the moment, I'm just about to start a psychology conversion in September with the aim of getting on an Ed Psych PHD funded course.
BPS have lots of up to date info.
There's been a very recent review of train for Ed Psychs, which is here
My big fear is that the competition for jobs is going to be fierce and the job market will have an over supply of Ed Psychs.
I did quite a lot of research last year, and you need a psychology degree or to do a conversion, you need work experience in the relevant field and you have to complete the 3 year PHD. I'm terrified!
