UCAS Question

JustGettingByMum · 10/03/2012 07:55

DS2 in Y12 got his Jan AS module results back on Thurs.

In C1 (Maths) he got a low A, & wants to resit for more marks.

My question is, does he have to put down his score, or his grade, both, or neither on the UCAS form?
If he only has to put down the Grade then he could wait till Jan next year to re-sit, but if he has to put down his score then he should probably re-sit in May.

Also any advice re the difficulty of the exams, I know a C1 exam should be the same difficulty whenever it's taken, but I read on TSR that Jan exams can be harder. Any views?
TIA

Think they find out the whole story ... you need to put dates when you got something and if it's a Jan results rather than a June it's an obvious resit. I believe you can withold but that just looks suspicious.

Hi Moomin, thanks for your reply. I fear you may be right Sad

I am copying the thread over onto the secondary ed page, I think it has more traffic than this page.

You need to check the schools policy re 'cashing in'DS had one rogue result (now resat with an A)so didn't disclose his AS marks on his UCAS form, although I understand his tutor did mention them in the reference .Obviously didn't matter as he got 5 offers .

This year (applying from Sept 2011) students had to declare qualifications that had been achieved (ie AS levels etc) with grades (not scores) and for each you had to say which modules were sat with a space for the module result (not score). It was optional to fill in the individual module results but not (for most schools) the qualification result. This was complicated by the fact that some private schools didn't cash in their AS qualifications, so those students didn't have to fill in their AS results. I think this was under review, so it may be different next year.

As to whether Jan exams are harder, I'm not sure, but C1 will 'feel' easier when your ds has done some more maths - a lot do resit it later on to get more marks.

I don't think a June result would look like an obvious resit, because in lots of schools they don't sit C1 until the summer anyway.

Aah, that's very interesting, so DS can legitimately say he has a Grade A in that module, but doesn't need to say he scored 82% - correct?

Then he can resit and hopefully improve! Yay!

Yes, that's the case. Only Cambridge ask for actual module scores routinely (separately from UCAS). A few other maths departments ask maths applicants for their maths module scores too - Durham is one - there aren't many and it only applies to people wanting to study maths as far as I know.
