Anyone have an opinion on UEA? (university of East Anglia)

Ds18 has a conditional offer to UEA to do Computer Systems Engineering. He has been to the visit day and it lived up to his expectations. The facilities are great and it has a good feel to it.
Would appreciate any opinions from anyone who has experience of this Uni good or bad.

DD1 is in her third year at UEA (studying abroad this year) and she has absolutely loved it there. It has a nice friendly vibe and a great place to be a student.

hocuspontas · 16/02/2012 20:45

The students I know there are having a ball.

shineoncubiczirconia · 16/02/2012 20:49

I studied there as a postgrad and worked there for several years. Heartily recommend. Have you any specific queries? About the university or area?

littlejo67 · 17/02/2012 16:39

Thanks for the info everyone. Dont have any specific queries about area or uni , as they seem really good.
He has offers for russell uni`s but UEA is his favourite. Was just wondering whether it is regarded positively by employers, not being a russell one?

My daughter is there; final year; enjoyed/enjoys herself a lot.

However worth scouting out the student accommodation, on campus, which they are allocated in first year as it varies significantly in quality, so an informed application is a good idea.

The Russell Group is formed of Universities which were very research intensive and so saw a common interest in that. But while all the universities in it are highly regarded an institution can be well regarded and NOT in it.

Durham and York for example which are together in another group, the 1994 group.

As it happens UEA is a member of the 1994 group which has ten members altogether , all of high standard.

I went there and loved it.

EduStudent · 05/03/2012 17:34

I've heard only good things from friends who have gone there, very, very active Students' Union and student life.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 05/03/2012 17:36

Is that the one with the world famous creative writing course?

PearsBeaufort · 05/03/2012 17:44

Now it is, yes. Good art course too though >biased

ThePathanKhansWitch · 05/03/2012 18:11

Oohh sounds great.Good luck.

Mumofthreeteens · 08/03/2012 12:29

My niece studied PPE there and loved it.

mummytime · 08/03/2012 12:32

It is very very good for somethings. I still wish people hadn't talked me out of applying many moons ago, I might have ended up in a slightly different field (or the same one by a different route).

CharminglyOdd · 08/03/2012 12:40

I went there and loved it. Very active student life and students' union as someone said above. Lots of opportunities for part-time work with the university (more than I have seen advertised at other unis - perhaps they just sell it better). Lots of culture as well - only real big music venue in Norfolk so they get a lot of good bands.

As to future prospects, I'm not sure. Certainly all the people I graduated with (two years ago) have jobs, although in some cases they were looking for a while but I don't think that's unusual in this climate. Several are pursuing PhDs with UEA and I think the uni is supportive of students who want to carry on their education - I received a lot of help with my MA application even though it was for a different institution. OTOH I now live Up North and quite often (even in a uni environment) have to explain where I went as 'Norwich'. I think the most important thing is to be happy - I really, really was and given my time again I would still choose UEA.

The only downside to campus is the trek to any food shopping - there are shops on/near campus but they are restricted and expensive. There is a direct bus to Morrisons from campus. Also very close to the hospital which came in handy once or twice!

adamschic · 08/03/2012 20:40

Going there in a couple of weeks with DD. I have heard its an up and coming 'good' uni. Only downside for us is that it's a trek to get there from where we live.

ragged · 07/04/2012 17:39

DH got a first from there, in same dept. OP is asking about :). Got a first, He's in the upper tax bracket now, so not done badly.

MyleeneCrass · 07/04/2012 17:50

Computing Sciences is a particularly strong school at UEA. The campus is stunning, and Norfolk is cheap compared to a lot of places.

mrswoodentop · 08/04/2012 17:20

Norwich is a lovely city and UEA has a really good name ,apparently it has one of the highest levels of people staying
In the city after graduation.

Adamschic we will probably keep passing you ,we are about 45 mins from Norwich but are heading to Leeds!
