Query with entry qualifications for B Ed

Hi,

Hope someone can help.

I want to do an undergraduate B Ed. having looked at entry qualifications I need a grade c or above GCSE in English, Maths and Science and also A Levels. Whilst I have grade B GCSE in English and Maths I have a D in Science. Is there a way round this or will I have to take my science GCSE again (Can this even be done?)

Also I left school half way through my A Levels so these weren't completed but I have since done and completed a full year of a degree course through the open university, will this count instead of A Levels? (I should mention I can no longer complete my degree through OU as time ran out).

Hoping someone can help!

You can get away without the A Levels but you will need to redo science.

It might be worth doing an access course - that will include the sciwnce GCSE or do it as an evening class / distance learning.

It is worth checking directly with the admissions tutor for that course. As a mature student there is a lot more flexibility in regards to the entry requirements.

My teaching degree (not a BEd; but it did included QTS) stated that GCSE C minimum in Maths and English together with A Levels). At the time I had a Maths C grade and a number of level 3 qualifications but they were not in the same field. I contacted the tutor directly, he interviewed me and put me forward to the university english equivalence exam. Basically - I had to sit an exam which wasn't an official GCSE but would give them an idea if my written english was up to it!

At first I was told I failed! But when the tutor chased it up for me, it turns out that it was marked to A level standard and when remarked; I was given a place!

I have now been teaching for 9 years and even though I have to put on application forms I only have a D in GCSE I have not had this as a weakness in any application. (I think that the year I took it shows that it is of no consequence as it was so long ago Grin)

Best thing to do is to speak to them. A friend of mine recently rest her Science GCSE so she could apply for a PGCE. So definitely doable Smile Good luck!

Thank you. Uni finally got back to me today to confirm that due to the age discrimination act which was passed in 1996 I definitely do need GCSE Grade C in Science. Grrrr. Just need to find out how?where I can retake it now.

List of Teaching Access Courses here

Also try contacting local FE colleges, who are probably more than used to people retaking GCSEs.
