Hi, please help. Trying to get through a grammar module and am really struggling. Got some of these answers, but then i start doubting myself!
Any MNetters can help me with these - would be much appreciated.

What part of speech is the underlined word?

eg: she was aggressive = adjective
show me the money = definite article

That is my fish
It is mine, not yours
Drinking can be dangerous
Pass it to her
I heard Susan cry
Why is bus moving so slowly
the concert that is want to attend, is fully booked
He is going to Wendy's
When does the train leave
She wants to read but she can't
I should be there tomorrow, but i can't
Have you pondered over it
I can sing opera classics

That is my fish possessive adjective or dependent possessive pronoun (depending on who wrote your grammar book)
It is mine, not yours Possessive pronoun (independent possessive pronoun)
Drinking can be dangerous Gerund (or verbal noun)
Pass it to her object pronoun
I heard Susan cry verb (preterite)
Why is bus moving so slowly adverb
the concert that I want to attend, is fully booked relative pronoun
He is going to Wendy's prepositioin
When does the train leave auxiliary verb
She wants to read but she can't verb (infinitive)
I should be there tomorrow, but i can't conjunction
Have you pondered over it verb (past participle)
I can sing opera classics verb (present tense)

Now I'll stop doing your homework instead of mine...

And I hope that wasn't part of a TMA - that would be cheating

Spru · 10/01/2012 11:34

Thank you so much!

What is a TMA? This is a part of a linguistics module (not assessed) that i really should not have taken as it has completely bewildered me. And i thought grammar was going to be fun but not this challenging!!

Is your grammar just wonderful Donki, or do you have to do more reading for these sort of exercises?

I can figure out verbs but then words such as past participle, infinitive etc throw me!!

Apparently I went to school (what gets perjoratively called a "bog standard Comprehensive") in the period when no-one was taught grammar....

However they forgot to tell me I wan't supposed to learn it - and the school had various language clubs run by an eccentric Chemistry teacher. I did Esperanto for fun - and you can't help but learn the grammar because of the way the language is constructed.

But I am a scienctist really....

A TMA is a "tutor marked assessment" with the Open University... if I had been seriously worried I would have deleted my post!

Where are you doing the linguistics module?

Donki · 10/01/2012 19:31

scientist Blush

hmm, skiving off my homework here too

I can sing opera classics verb (present tense)
"can" = a modal auxiliary verb (sing is the main verb)

I heard Susan cry verb (preterite)
"heard" yup, verb, this is often called the past simple / past tense too.

Look in your course materials for the terminology they use.

These books might help you:

Swan,M Practical English Usage
or
Leech, Cruickshank & Ivanic An A-Z of English Grammar and Usage

They aren't too difficult and have lots of examples :)
