Have you advise your DC against any career?

DS1 (12) asked today during dinner how much doctors earned.

He wanted to know if surgeons earned a lot (he thought they should because they had to look at blood, which makes him feel funny) and how much a GP earned. He said he really didn't want to spend all day in a small room while different people came in and coughed all over him. He was a bit Sad because he liked the idea of earning as much as a consultant surgeon.

I just said "I really don't think medicine's for you. Try law instead Grin)

Good career / salary type info here

I went through this with DD1 and talked about mortgages / funding a lifestyle to try to encourage her to work harder at school.

DS(15) wants to be a film director and has for the last three years. I don't think anything I could say about it being an unstable career and not everyone making it big would put him off so we just smile and leave him to it.

Love the description of a GPs day though Lynette!

i do remember telling my daughter that being a nurse wasn't a good option as they REALLY work very hard for long shifts and get paid relatively poor Xmas Sad
as it happens she doesn't like needles or the sight of blood - so wouldnt ha re been her cup of tea

I just reinforce the fact that if possible go for a career that mostly means when you get up in the morning you look forward to your day ahead.
They have both interpretted this as finding a rich wife and doing nothing!
