dd has been at Nottingham 2 weeks. Had a brilliant freshers, made lots if friends etc but now has a good dose of freshers flu ( probably tonsillitis tbh).
She's survived the 1st week of teaching though a bit shocked at how little contact time I think.

We went up today as she has also got a choral scholarship and she had a concert. Kmowin her and her singing so well it was clear she was miming and trying not to cough all the way through Sad.

Left her with various medication and instructions but she's really quite poorly and it was hard leaving her because of that. She tried to say she wasn't well enough to sing tomorrow but got a shity retort Angry. I guess the musical director has had a lot of this and doesn't know her well enough to know she isn't a skiver. Shell have to go and mime again - aw.

Nb inher or Ilya choir coughing was q capital offence and you'd be sent home with a flea in your ear if you attended with a cough !!

I didn't know Nottingham did choral scholarships,Theas18 -tell me more! Thought it was just Oxbridge/Durham/KCL and Royal Holloway.

Hope she feels better soon. SO many go down with a bug at the beginning.

PrincessTamTam · 09/10/2011 11:46

HUH! I wouldn't bleedin know! He wont call me back, just got one word txt when I sent him some jeans in the post - "thanks".

Grumble grumble, mutter mutter, hope he does get a bug... Angry Sad

Theas18 · 09/10/2011 11:51

Aw princess tam tam. Hope he communicates soon!

Wolfbrother- not the uni directly but here

www.stmaryschoirnottingham.com/

Concert yesterday was really very good ( we know a bit about choral music too) and they have only had 3 rehearsals for it! It will get even better I'm sure.

He only went last weekend, but it seems like ages and I miss him. Sob. Just a quick phone call to say he's ok wouldn't hurt! I know its a sign he is having a ball that he hasn't rung... but still... Sorry... I suspect its a boy thing, and a first time uni mum thing. Smile

PrincessTamTam · 09/10/2011 11:57

Sorry! well done to your DD for getting a scholarship! sounds wonderful, I love choral music. All mine are tone deaf.

Theas18 · 09/10/2011 13:25

Princess they days seem awfully long without them don't they- even though I have the younger 2 still at home it's all " wrong":(.

It is getting a bit easier day by day.

PrincessTamTam · 09/10/2011 13:55

It is getting a bit easier, I don't feel the need to cry every time I go into his room, well not every time... I have 3 more here and am hoping it will be easier when/if they go. Sad.

DS1 has been away for 2 weeks and is loving it! He seems to have been really lucky in having a good flat, shared with nice people. Freshers finished last night with the Freshers Ball, and his FB status - updated at 4am this morning just says "I LOVE SOUTHAMPTON" Hmm
Lectures began last week, but were more of the getting to know you, rather than full on work. However his schedule is really heavy
9-5 Mon, Tues,Thurs
9-6 Friday
& half day Weds, finishes at 1pm

We won't be seeing him for another 2 weeks, but I did feel better when he said he hadn't joined the ski society because they would be away over Christmas and he wants to come home for Christmas - aaahhh Wink

jgbmum · 09/10/2011 15:26

Theas18- sorry your DD is unwell. Hope she makes a quick recovery.

PrincessTamTam · 09/10/2011 18:05

Just heard from him at last! He's having a great time and has been out every night with his new flatmates who all sound like a good bunch. Phew! So glad he's settled well it makes me so happy to hear him sounding so into it all. Says he may come back for a weekend in a few weeks but I wont hold my breath as he's joined quite a few societies and his course starts tomorrow so expect he will have lots on.

jgb - V sweet your DS1 turned down skiing for home at Christmas... bless their cotton socks.

GardenersDelight · 09/10/2011 18:29

My DD is having a ball! great flat and flatmates only contacts me for advice on cooking. Back this w/e not really to see us but the BF she left behind

Theas18 · 10/10/2011 13:45

Spoke to her yesterday and she's feeling a bit better thank goodness.

PTT glad you've heard from him now!

jgb How sweet that he still wants to be home for Xmas! DD is the same. She could staying in nottingham and sing but doesn't have too- she wants to come home and sing at the cathedral here with all her old friends on Xmas morning.

Hello there - I thought I would share that Oxford seems to be a fantastic place to be- loads of friends, societies, good tutoring (essay given back marked within 24 hours!) and today I hear there was an inspirational welcome talk from the vice chancellor
all sorts has happened from ice hockey to drama to orchestra to the Oxford union and law society plus dinners in hall plus pyjama parties and 'the purple turtle' club plus a very sensible interactive session on what exactly is meant by consent to sex which made the girls feel a lot safer-my DD is very very happy, long may it last.

funnyperson · 15/10/2011 12:04

Only it doesnt last long

webwiz · 15/10/2011 12:46

DD2 had a great freshers week and made loads of friends but then succumbed to freshers flu. She is a lot better now but is still a bit croaky. The workload seems pretty heavy for her course but she is keeping up and enjoying it. We're going to see her next weekend so am looking forward to that.

senua · 15/10/2011 15:47

wolfbrother "I didn't know Nottingham did choral scholarships -tell me more! Thought it was just Oxbridge/Durham/KCL and Royal Holloway."

A bit late in the day but, if you are still on this thread, have you seen this?

wolfbrother · 15/10/2011 16:39

Thank you senua. I missed out "for girls" from my post!

LaineyW · 18/10/2011 18:46

DD has been at uni for a month now and is loving it. She has been home twice already (and her BF went up to stay for almost a week almost as soon as freshers' week finished...). We were a bit concerned that she might not be integrating as well as we'd hoped if she was coming home so often and her boyfriend was going up there too, but she assures us that everyone goes home much more than she'd thought and she doesn't want to be rattling around on her own just for the sake of it. Does that sound right?

Her FB pictures do suggest that she's having a ball and she seems constantly surrounded by friends who are tagging her in the pics so I reckon she's telling the truth!

IShallWearMidnight · 18/10/2011 18:50

DD1 is loving university life - she had freshers flu during freshers week so was able to cope a bit better with the workload when it hit once term started properly. I am slightly concerned though that one of her housemates has organised her and a couple of others into "maths club" which does algebra on a Saturday and Sunday evening Shock Shock Grin. Whatever happened to partying?

funnyperson · 18/10/2011 19:06

[hshock] do you think its true?

IShallWearMidnight · 18/10/2011 19:18

was that to me funnyperson? Yes, sadly I do think it's true, I'm just surprised there are more maths geeks out there than I suspected Wink.

She did say that not very much work was done after about 10.30, but even so...

funnyperson · 18/10/2011 19:28

Yes it was, Ishallwearmidnight perhaps they go out together afterwards!

webwiz · 18/10/2011 21:41

I think Bath is teeming with Maths geeks Ishall - after being in a class of 3 for further maths DD2 is loving the company!

seimum · 20/10/2011 20:33

DD2 says she is enjoying the lectures at Lancaster. She is also 'busy'.

She has joined the hiking club and sent us pretty photos from a walk in the Lake District last weekend.

Oh - and she rang up to get advice on washing things!

MOSagain · 26/10/2011 16:46

DS1 is loving it so far. I saw him just over a week ago when we went on a charity trek to Jordan (which we had signed up for 18 months ago when he had dreams of a gap year!) so he had to miss a few days at Uni to go. He had a very bad case of freshers flu which turned into a bad chest infection and the doctor (thank god was an English dr on trek) was very worried it would turn into pneumonia Sad Thankfully we (just about) managed to complete Jordan and he is now back at Uni and recovering. Won't see him now until just before Christmas.
