We found out this evening at 8pm that barely 18 yo DS has not got into halls at his university. The university is now expecting a bunch of 18 yo to go up to Swansea and trudge around the town trying to find a house to rent privately with a bunch of people they do not know. I am very Angry and stressing a lot on his behalf. He says it could be fun but I can tell he's worried as well.

I am mostly worried about him socialising, so would really like to know if anybody has any experience of living out of halls in their first year and what it was like- good thing or bad thing overall?

dreaming yes DD2's boyfriend has found something in Bournemouth, he's sharing with 4 other first years. He seemed to get sorted out very quickly so hopefully your DS will be the same next week.

Looks like Swansea isn't the only university with this issue - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-14850403 - Aberyswyth is turning rooms into doubles by installing bunk or twin beds.

We're in Cardiff, and a number of dd's friends are also searching for somewhere to live in Swansea - although because they live within (I think) 40 miles, they weren't entitled to uni accommodation as a right anyway.

Thank you for Morgans hotel recommendation Mitfords Maid- it does look lovely. I decided that I couldn't quite run to their prices at the moment (we're a bit broke) so I booked myself into the Premier Inn on the Marina with the baby (DS staying at the university) and will hope it's quite calm. Decided against the central travelodge as it looked like it might be quite noisy, especially in the middle of the roadworks.

Well, you've picked the hotel where CZJ and Michael Douglas used to stay, so if it is good enough for them it can't be bad. I used to see the paps outside waiting for them from time to time. It has great views and you are just down the road from Joe's Ice Cream Parlour. I really am not joking, it is the best ice-cream anywhere. Good luck!

Seriously? No wonder they're so well off! They could afford Morgans yet they go to the Premier Inn. Canny...

PS: thank for the ice-cream recommendations- I shall hunt them down!

Thinking on it, they stayed at The Holiday Inn. So many hotels! They are actually very down to earth, I once saw them pushing a buggy around the Marina and they said hello and gave me a smile. It took a while for me to twig who they were. MD also gave my uncle advice on cold cures at a party and seemed convincingly unstarry.

How did the house hunting go?

duchesse · 16/09/2011 00:31

Back this evening. DS has found a nice house with 3 other lads 6 mn walk from the university. Spar, fish and chip shop and pub approx 3 mn walk away from the house. He seems very happy.

I have ordered some student cookbooks this evening.
