Sheffield University

DD has an offer to study at Sheffield University this sept although after accepting her offer she now has some concerns and wants to apply again for next year. I just have a few questions. Is Sheffield a top uni? Will going to Sheffield prevent her from getting a good job in the future? What is the likelihood of her getting into a better university with predicted A*AA at A-level - applying for a very competitive subject. Any wise-words i could pass on would be great.

Depends where he lives Ponders :)

Friend's DS was in student flats and it was £120pw and that was 3 or 4 years ago! Ouch.

But yes, shared house probably not too bad depending on location.

But fab place to be. It really is a very friendly city - has a repuation of a village like feel within a city :)

It is one of the Russell Groups leading universities, not to be confused with Sheffield Hallam, the ex poly.

My daughter went to Sheffield and is now completing a PhD in her chosen field. She absolutely loved it and was very happy there, so much so that she has persuaded her younger brother to go there this September (grades permitting!).

Thanks, Hula Smile

He has put down for Endcliffe Village, self-catering, shared bathroom - just under £100 a week (I hope!) (£3,810.24 pa - a rather random amount Confused)

En suite, with catering, is £5765.34

Next year I assume he'll go into a house with friends so I hope that will be cheaper (it had better be, because his finance will be considerable lower, due to DH's salary being quite a bit higher, but not enough higher for us to be able to sub him the difference)

I'm a sheffield graduate and absolutely loved it. I still occasionally teach sheffield undergrad students (not history though) and they are usually very happy. It is a wonderful city to live in

Great area for him to be in too - and no doubt you'll get to enjoy the various eateries near Ecclesall Road and Broomhil on visits to feed him up! :)

DS has loved being in Endcliffe this year - although it has involved a lot of walking! It's a great mid-way stage between home and the big wide world - although the presence of on-site security etc. didn't seem to limit their escapades too much!

He didn't go catered, but the great thing is that they can go into the eating place and buy a meal if they want to, which is great flexibility to have. DS didn't actually do that too much, but I felt better knowing he could.

I'm a PhD graduate from Sheffield, and I met DH there, who was doing his Masters there too. We both have got good jobs (the economy notwithstanding) and were very happy to say to people that we were from Sheffield. We don't live there now, but if our children were old enough to even think about university, I'm sure we'd both be v happy if either went to or chose Sheffield.

All them years ago, student living was v cheap. We ended up in a flat above Pizza Hut in Crooke - it was a lovely flat, and vv warm! lol!!

I know this is a old thread now, but as a Sheffield uni graduate (and hoping to take my PhD there) I just wanted to add my piece.

The university itself is excellent, both for teaching and a vibrant student life. Sheffield as a city is incredibly friendly and yes, it is the uni with the highest % of graduates choosing to remain after graduation (most of my friends came to study and never left!)

Hope this info is helpful for anyone thinking of attending in 2012/2013!
