This site is well worth a look if you want to study in English in the Netherlands:

Thank you for posting that web page. It was very useful. DS1 has only just taken his GCSEs, but we are already discussing how/where he may study.

You're welcome. The choice of Bachelor degrees is not very big but it seems to be increasing every year.

There are about 180 bachelor degrees in Netherlands at the moment and the number is growing. Next year for example sees the introduction of the first English Literature BA taught entirely in English (and mostly by native academics). There is a list on www.studyinholland.co.uk which is regularly updated.

I am currently working on a project to list all English-taught undergraduate qualifications in Europe (excluding UK and Ireland). I expect there will be about 1000 courses in total.

I'm in awe of you doing that. This will be so useful for me - 3 DC going to be in Y12/Y10/Y8. We already had started looking as I said above, but if you can do that list, that will be fantastic. I do keep looking on the Dutch site and we have already discussed how DS1 will/would support himself - working in bars and football refereeing!

astarman have looked for the English lit course but can't find it. Which uni are going to offer it?

astarman · 18/08/2011 15:23

It will be University of Groningen. Degree will be called BA English Studies. I met the head of faculty earlier this year and he promised to send me course information by now, but so far nothing - not unusual for academics! I expect it will be included in the 2012-2013 prospectus that will be issued next month. If you message me I will add you to a long list of people who have already requested info on this and get it sent to you as soon as I have it.

You can also major in English Lit at University College of Utrecht. This would be a US-style undergraduate qualification.

IloveJudgeJudy British students in NL seem to be supporting themselves as media celebrities at the moment if the facebook group www.facebook.com/pages/Dutch-Degrees/196261237055480 is to be believed. Also, students at Groningen will be featured on ITV Tonight Show on Thursday 25th August if your son wishes to whet his appetite.

astarman, I didn't realise there were that many - thanks for that link - it's easier to find the courses than it is on nuffic.

We were on BBC Radio 4 Money Box Live talking about Dutch student finance earlier this week. Here is a link to the podcast: www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/moneybox

The English Lit degree at University of Groningen that I mentioned in an earlier post is now confirmed. Details can be found here: www.studyinholland.co.uk/courses/groningen/university_of_groningen/english_studies.html

With the studyinholland link, just be aware that some information is a little misleading. The bits where they talk about there being two types of "universities" - research universities and hogescholen. Hogescholen are not equivalent to british universities. To get an equivalent of a british undergrad degree, you really should look at undergraduate masters degrees in NL.
