I would think a year, but check with local college.

happychappy · 08/05/2011 09:16

Is there no way to do it quicker?

Depends if their is a practical or coursework element that needs completing. If not, I'd go to the local FE/Adult ed college and see what they say about you gatecrashing a resit if you already have the knowledge.
They'll be able to give you advice anyway.

Do you want to self-teach or go to a college?

GCSE Science, which is what most students spends their Year 10 doing, takes one academic year. It requires you to do controlled assessments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which are marked by teachers.

If you want to self teach, you need to investigate the iGCSE, and note when you can take the various exams.

Do you need a science qualification to be able to move onto further education. If so, you probably have a lot of options, and are not limited to what is known as GCSE Science.

If you went hell for leather with self study - 1 GCSE should only take 3 months, at most. I did 9 GCSEs over 2 academic years, as I'm sure many others did (or even more than that).

Finding somewhere to sit the practicals is the problem.

Anc1ent · 19/05/2011 23:27

is it for a requirement to do another training course - like teaching? If so, the HE providers / universities often do one of their own [crash] courses, sometimes GCSE and sometimes their own equivalent, aimed precisely at people who need it as an entry req.
(if you want to either say vaguely what area you are in or pm then we can check it out on here?)

Jaspants · 19/05/2011 23:31

You could ask on the Home Ed board they may know how you go about sitting the exam at a local college / school?

Anc1ent · 19/05/2011 23:36

no experience of it - just googled, but look here

Loshad · 19/05/2011 23:37

you won't be able to do it before jan now anyway - all the modules will not be available for sitting before then if doing regular gcse's - the spec has changed as of now - and out current y9s will be sitting their first exams in jan instead of nov - the exam boards are removing the november sittings for science. You also need to do an isa (controlled coursework) or else will need to be an iGCSE - think they are keeping on with the nov exams
