Speech and language therapy MSc - funding headache

NormanTebbit · 28/04/2011 21:51

Finishing OU PGdip psychology next year. Distinctions so far so should at least get 2:1.

Looking at two year SALT MSc at Quuen Margret College Edinburgh. It costs £7,650 per annum

I can get career dev loan gor £10,000 (gulp). But will have to find the rest. Any advice?

My heart is saying 'do it' my head is saying go into teaching- tuition fees paid, guaranteed paid probationary year, but real shortage of jobs - and forget about SALT MSc..

Why do you have to pay? Is it a Scotland thing, I thought course fees were funded by the NHS they are in London or England it seems

NormanTebbit · 28/04/2011 22:23

Nope.

Some other allied health professions are but not SALT, sadly.

really? have you checked the nhs student bursary site?

littleducks · 28/04/2011 22:32

can't you come to England ......its only two years and would save alot of money!

I am doing SALT (undergrad as the postgrad is too full on) and have moved for the four years

NormanTebbit · 28/04/2011 22:42

I have two in school and DP needs his jobSad

Nope scotland's SAAS does not fund it. Other courses are funded.

It's alot of debt when you have three children, isn't it. Sad

where do you live? would it be feasible to travel for the course?

NormanTebbit · 29/04/2011 07:25

I live in glasgow. There is a BSC at strathclyde but it is 4 years and I would have to pay tuition fees as it is a second degree.

I suppose I could apply to Newcastle but it is a hell of a drive.
I'll have to think again I suppose, I don't think I could justify the family being £15,000 in debt ( although that seems a drop in the ocean for students these days...)

train?
you could get a student railcard
(tbh I have no idea of train routes between Glasgow and Newcastle, you may have to go via Manchester)
a friend of mine did the ed psych course when her kids were quite little, she stayed at university mon-fri.
