DS1 has accepted his place there so we now have to apply for accommodation.

Anyone any experience/recommendations?

TIA

There is a range of different accommodation, depends how much money and what sort of person he is as to which he'd like best. Can he get down for one of the open days? They run informal ones as well, details on the website.
We looked last year, good range of choices.
It's our local, DD went elsewhere.

I think he's got a visit planned soon, GC - and we've already had a brochure outlining the types/costs. There's a lot on offer (assuming it's still available for him to choose from!), so I'm interested in the 'inside scoop' as it were.

Let me think...East Slope were cheaper but noisier, if he likes a crowd and a party atmosphere that would suit him.
The ensuite and more expensive accommodation is lovely and quieter. I don't know if the walls are thicker, but they seemed more robust and insulated.
They do go very quickly, so I'd grab sooner rather than later.

Thanks, GC!

My dd is there in her 2nd year. Last year she was in one of the buildings with own room and bathrooms and kitchen shared with 10 others. For the life of me I can't remember the name - something like Arundel House. The building was very sociable and she loved it. She is now sharing a house in Brighton with people who shared the kitchen. Student lets are expensive and on a par with London but without the extra allowance London students receive.

Goblinchild · 19/04/2011 20:16

It is a fantastic university and a lovely city. Where are you OP?

BecauseImWoeufIt · 19/04/2011 20:35

We are in SW London, so not that far away (but far enough!)

Perfect, an hour on the train. Smile

DS1 is sociable, but quiet - not a huge party animal. He's into music rather than sport, and he is gay.

Brighton will be a good city for him; huge variety of venues, excellent music scene and a high tolerance for eccentricity and difference.
My DS is 16 and an Aspie and I'm much happier with him wandering the streets of Brighton than say Exeter or Manchester.

Hi
I went the Sussex years and years ago and East Slope (five to six person appts) was fine but a bit risky on who you were housed alongside. Much safer to go for one of the big halls (I was in Lancaster House). Best years of my life, sigh...

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/05/2011 11:04

Thank you! I had forgotten I'd posted this!

DS1 just about to sort his accommodation out so will check that out.

My DD confirmed Sussex as her firm on the deadline. We have visited 3 times and checked out a range of accomodation. She is unsure now of her course choice and is getting cold feet about uni - but I expect she'll go in the end. She is terrified that she'll make no friends on her course and hate it.

Sussex seems great - small but friendly. My DP has a friend who gave uo on his course as a mature student as he said it felt like an overgrown 6th form but I know a couple of current students who are in their 20's and love it. We recently moved here from SE London and its great for teens, so much better than London. Most of our neighbours seem to be ex Sussex students who went to London for a couple of years but were drawn back.Although she is now a home student my DD hopes they will give her a place on campus.

We were told that The slopes were originally built for the workers building the uni and were meant for demolition but were kept as an alternative to the big halls (park houses? with long corridors of rooms) and extra ones added. They are cheap and look like little holiday chalets. Apparently they are very popular with "social "students - ie drinkers and partiers and are very good for making friends but can be rowdy. The 2 we looked round were very cramped - tiny kitchen and dim and smelly and the 1 toilet between 6 was a bit gross - I thought well I lived in worse but my daughter is a very pristine , trendy girl and doesn't like drinking etc and didn't fancy it.

We also some the Brighthelm houses which were shared flats of 6-8 which I thought were very nice and had a good size kitchen and a sofa. They had sinks in the room and 2 toilets.

We saw Lewes court - 2 types the ones with sinks in the room and the ones with little ensuites (more expensive) they were really nice too (heating way too hot). Stanmer court was lovely and very modern but was across the dual carriageway and built next to it so was noisy and a bit out on its own as the other places were all behind the main campus buildings and very quiet.

There is also a huge new block of flats due for completion by SEptember - more expensive again.

The students showing us around had enjoyed living in the slopes and park houses, one girl had lived in Brighthelm and she said she preferred that as she liked a bit of quiet for studying. The 25 buses that snake all through the campus go every 10-15 minutes 24 hours into the centre and there are quite visible security patrols on site.

We are filling in the forms tomorrow - I think she will put Lewes court and Brighthelm down as although everyone including some staff at her school who are ex students have told her to choose the slopes or park house for a good time she wants the more private facilities. Everyone advised us not to select the postgrad dominated houses and halls as they can be grumpy, old and want total quiet and choose not too near the family flats either.

Hope your sons gets his grades.PM me if you want to know anything about brighton.

babybrioche · 12/05/2011 12:08

I went there Smile

I lived in Flat 1, East Slope, right next to the bar. It was VERY social Grin That was in 1997 but I don't think it's changed much.

THe kitchen/living areas in East Slope are very small for the number of students who live in them, but the bedrooms are a good size.

I had a few friends in Lewes Court which was much nicer. Lovely big living areas plus sinks in the bedrooms.

The big halls were ok, but not so much of a sense of living with flatmates (obviously) if that makes sense.

BecauseImWorthIt · 12/05/2011 12:08

enidroach - thank you so much - that's really helpful. Especially as you've made me realise that we don't have any forms for accommodation, so I need to get on to the University asap!

My son already has his grades, and his place is a definite one based on these grades, so he will absolutely, definitely be going to Sussex. (It's been a long road getting there ... Grin)

What is your daughter going to be studying? DS1 is studying history and philosophy.

I'm sure she will be absolutely fine, and will make loads of new friends. That's the beauty of university, isn't it?

enidroach · 12/05/2011 12:51

My DD is doing physical geography - she is doing her exams in June so its a conditional offer. She is starting to wonder if she really wants to do it - her other A levels are in the sciences, but the killer of a gap year would be the increased fees.

When we went for her offer day they said that if you put the accomodation forms in by the 30 June you will get accomodation on campus guaranteed (so won't end up shunted to the houses the uni owns dotted around brighton). We also met some really nice ( parents) and kids who were planing to do history, psychology and English- very friendly.

This has reminded me I still have to finish doing battle with the confusing on line finance forms.

All the best

TobyLerone · 12/05/2011 12:53

My sister went a few years ago and I went to visit her for a weekend once when she was in the first year. The campus accommodation was lovely -- like little self-contained flats with 4 or 5 bedrooms (some of which where ensuite) and communal living/kitchen areas.

She loved it so much there that she went back to do a masters this year, after a couple of years away.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/05/2011 12:58

I went there tooGrin

More years ago than I care to think about but had a great time and have never left the area!

I was in East Slope as well. Right near the bars, little flatlets with about 8 rooms in each. Really loved it although no-one ever cleaned anything so it was permanently disgustingGrin

titchy · 12/05/2011 13:05

Me too - a very very VERY long time ago. Sussex house if I remember correctly - 12 rooms sharing one kitchen and bathroom. sinks int he room if you couldn't be arsed to wander down the corridor to the loo Blush.

I seem to remember that the sockets in the room wouldn't take anything with a heater in so everyone would use their hairdryers in the corridor!

I vaguely remember serving in East Slope Bar....

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/05/2011 13:32

I loved East Slope bar. It was within 100 yards of the flat I was in, very easy to stagger homeGrin

£1 a pint!! Those were the days....
