DO AS modules have to be reported on the UCAS form?

I'd really appreciate your help on this. My DS1 has ASD and just got a D in his first A level module. He is devastated as everything before has been A's. It could be a good wake up call for him - but it would really help to comfort him if I kneew whether the module result goes to the uni? He is very back and white and is desperate to go to Oxford - I need to have something positive to say to him - any ideas??

Thank you so much.

As far as I know Oxford do not ask for module results. It is Cambridge that insists on this. Is this an A2 module and has he already applied? If so they only get the end results in the summer.
If he is in year 12 and it is an AS module he can just retake it in the summer and no one is any the wiser. Whichever of those I don't think January module results which are going to be retaken need to be reported to anyone - even Cambridge.

Both my son and daughter's school had a policy of not entering AS results in the Academic qualifications bit. They were described as "pending certification" or something similar. They took all their AS exams at the end of year 12, so even the complete AS exam result didn't need to go in, let alone a module.
They were both Oxford applicants btw - one in , one not.

If it's an A2 module you're talking about then I'm afraid I don't know - ( again DS and DD went to school where the whole A2 was done at the end of year 13 - I would have thought, however the universities just want to hear of the final result in the summer and not get pieces of paper about modules along the way.

He's likely to re-take in the summer then? It might only be one aspect (such as the oral test of a language exam).

He will then fill in his UCAS form in the autumn term with a better result behind him.

I honestly can't remember whether DC had to include module results when she did UCAS form last year but I think not.

What you do need to watch is that one poorish result doesn't affect his predicted grade. PGs are very important.

Thank you so much for this - it turns out that there were a lot of very poor results, with crying in the coridor!

It is good to knw that he can move on from this.

At DC's school no AS results are entered, as the points are not 'cashed in' with the exam board until the end of the A2 year.

Tell your DS that my DS got E in one of his modules, and came out with an A* - so it can be turned round.

You may need to ask if the school certificate the AS results as well as the A2s. If they are certificated (which tends to happen in lots of schools with a comprehensive intake as it means students who leave at the end of Y12 can leave with their certificated qualifications in hand) then those results will be in the public domain in August and the university can access them if they choose to. It will also depend on the subject, some subjects will be pickier about retakes than others.

I think the rules are changing for 2012 entry and the AS results have to be entered. I assume january modules don't have to be included if they are resat in May and a better result is obtained but the pending option is being taken away for AS results.

slipshodsibyl · 18/03/2011 15:24

yes, as WEbiz says, the rules are changing and maintained schools are having to enter AS Levels from this year. Independent schools do not have to but will probably follow suit.
