I've been asked to be a guarantor for DD's shared house

I'm a bit concerned as DD is sharing a house with four people and I have no proof that the other parents are acting as guarantors too. The university Students Union and housing office says it's standard practice (though I have been told the forms may not be worth the paper they are written on legally).

I would not have the money to pay rent if any of her flatmates goes AWOL so it feels a bit scary.

Anyone else had to fill in one of these guarantor forms?

I had to fill in one for DD1 for her shared house but it only guaranteed her rent not anyone elses. They all had to have the guarantor form signed or they weren't allowed to enter into the rental agreement. We haven't had any problems they all pay their rent by direct debit and they have an account for bills that they all pay into. They have all decided to share with different people next year because they all now find each other really annoying!

Guarantor forms are fairly standard with student accommodation. There was a thread about this some time ago - main point made was to ensure that you were only liable for your DC's rent and not for the rent of the whole house.
Someone in the house will probably be the named person on the utilities bills etc, so make sure that your DC isn't the named person for more than one bill (and that the flatmates seem reliable!)

Is it Finders Keepers by any chance?

I personally wouldn't, as you may be eligible for the entire rent if her flatmates go awol.

We did this for DS when renting in London but the form was only for his share of the rent, not the other students.

Dh has done this for DD2. It is for her part of the rent. She shares with 4 others and they have each got a garentor. It has been fine.

They are very organised at DD's house have set up a rent account and also an account to pay bills.

Yes, standard practice I'm afraid. We are guarantors for DS's house where he shares with 7 others....

You have to I'm afraid. You find find any student accommodation that doesn't have the same system.
