Student Protest today - Who pays for damage?

After today's little melee outside Tory HQ, who will pay for the damage caused by some our very well behaved students? (NOT!)

They are protesting about having to bear the cost of further education yet cause damage that WE will no doubt have to pay for.

I am perplexed. Seriously.

Yes, but unless we can get the govt to back down, the fees are set to increase threefold. Two (or rather, three) wrongs don't make a right.

I am not from a posh background at all, I do not own my own home so am not used to debt.

Hi CristinatTheAstonishing (I wish I'd chosen a more interesting monicker, like yours). Sorry, we were both typing away at the same time. My post of 00:06:ll was in response to the one pointing out that TB was the one who introduced tuition fees.
Yes, there's really no understanding by Cameron and Clegg of the way many people's minds work. The decision to escalate students' fees is a really poisonous one and sabotauges (?sp? I'm tired)any progress towards a more egalitarian society (but since when have the Conservatives been in favour of such a thing anyway?) Off to bed now, if I can sleep - I'm so angry, my teeth will be ground to stumps by the morning! Bye.

I think it is very unfair how this demonstration has been portrayed in the media. This was by and large a peaceful protest. 50,000 people turned up and it was estimated that about 300 broke away and caused trouble, there were 35 arrests, 14 injuries, out of 50,000 people. Of course the media will grip onto the small minority and report and sensationlise it. If you speak to students that were there they will say that they never saw any of it and that it was a jovial and carnival atmosphere.

I have every admiration for the students, they are not even thinking of themselves as this won't come into effect until after they have left, I think its great that they are standing up for the future generation. I would like to think that as parents especially we can support them rather than worry about a few pounds of "tax payers money" and remember that the vast majority of these students behaved very well and not judge them on what a tiny minority of people did.

my dd1 is just starting her AS/A level route & will be a 2012 student. She is understandably angry about the fee increase, especially as she wishes to study Psychology with a view to going onto do a masters & then Phd in Forensic Psychology. She sees herself having debt of up to 100k if she doesn't manage to work through achieving her goals. Her view is that if a middle class student can earn 100k more in their lifetime through getting a degree, but have to pay that back through student debts, that it surely makes her an equal with a working class person who doesn't go to uni & therefore potentially earns 100k less than her without the accompanying debts. ( I haven't used the class postion myself, this is purely her views, before I get flamed) I can understand her frustration, we can't afford to support her a lot through uni & she is fully aware of this. She didn't attend the demo yesterday but knows people who did & she supports what they are protesting about.

If my dd came out with such tosh I would be ashamed. If she is put off a career because less worthy people may get the same as her she can't really want it anyway.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 11/11/2010 20:46

Waterloo - perhaps you'd consider that you're talking like that about Badgerhead's DD. You must know how hurtful it is to have your child abused verbally. Maybe you could rephrase? You're hardly likely to have understood completely this girl's p.o.v.

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 11/11/2010 22:09

I have no issue with the girl, I don't know her so that would be daft. I have an issue that her daughter expresses such views. I am working class as is my whole family, why are we so undeserving?
