Bursaries from NHS and for PGCEs

Do you think they are good idea or a waste of tax payers money?

A lot of people are backing the proposals for increased tuition fees and higher interest on student loans instead of it being subsidised heavily by the tax payer. I just wondered what people thought about certain courses being paid for by the NHS and the TDA.

Some subjects at PGCE do get bursaries. Well those doing English and Science do anyway. I Know this as My niece did English and DD1 did Biology for PGCE. They are both now teaching in Secondary Schools. The bursary did not cover all thier costs and they stil had to pay tuition fees.

Sorry I misunderstood what you said. I se that you said PGCE got bursaries, I actually think it's a good idea. Yes perhaps tax payers are paying for it but most studnets taking these courses have parents who pay tax.Anyway I think it's good ibvesting in the NHS and Teaching

I think there should be a tie in that you have to work in that profession for the nhs/ state school in UK for x years or have to pay all the money back. Its common now for people to do a health degree and then just use it as a degree as they don't pay fees - and that has had a bad knock on effect on ingress to the profession

I agree that it it is a good way of investing in future services, and workforce planning, and also that there should be a tie-in. If this was a case however, there would have to be guaranteed jobs for all qualifying who had received a bursary. Which would be brilliant, but is certainly far from the present reality.
