Question about going back into further education- Scottish Highers

I am interested in going back to university to study psychology or nursing.

The problem is that first time around (age 17), I only just scraped through clearing to get into uni with 2 higher grades (in Scotland), when you really need at least three. The only reason I got in is because I got 2 x A's in English and German. I did get a D for Economics but I think that is counted as a fail in Scotland.

Anyway, I didn't finish my degree (only did just under 2 years due to personal circumstances), and always regretted that.

I would like to go back, but I need to know how I would go about getting the necessary grades to apply to do the above courses.

Can they be done at a local college? I live in England now so I assume it would be A-levels I would need to do.

Also, will the Scottish Highers and the one full year of Uni count towards anything? (The course I did was Graphic Communication Management, so nothing like what I am looking to do now).

Sorry if it's all a bit garbled Grin.

I am in a sort of similar position; didn't actually get any highers (I'm also in Scotland) and would love to go to university or do some open learning when the DC are in school (still a few years away yet).

The problem is, is that all of the courses are looking for higher grades as an entry requirement and I only have standard grades. I would like to try and get a few higher grade results to enable me to enter the course but don't know how I would go about getting these. I have been looking on various college/uni websites but they just seem to have HNC/HND's etc.

Hopefully someone will be able to give us some advice about it, I may post another thread in Chat (usually quite a busy topic so will hopefully get some feedback there).

I'm in Scotland! Colleges do seem to offer mainly HNCs/HNDs, but you can do highers at evening classes. Or, check the entry requirements for the degrees you want to do - it may well be that if you do the HNC they'll take that in lieu of highers? I know that HNDs will get you into the second year of a degree course.

Pioneer - I think most unis these days expect at least 4 highers from you to get in.... Certainly when I was applying for uni in 1996 that seemed to be the way. A D is a pass. Pass marks for highers are 40% and 40% - 50% is a D (I think - it's a while since I finished school so don't take my word for it!). You can definitely do A levels at college in England.
