BLW and highchairs

MrsChemist · 08/02/2010 00:44

I'm getting a highchair tomorrow, and I picked one out that I liked, only to read a few poor online reviews, one of them mentioned that it was particularly bad for BLW.

So what does one look for in a good highchair and does the fact that I intend to BLW make a difference? (The review mentioned that the back was sloping so it made it harder for younger babies to get to the tray)
TIA for any replies.

Lots of straps to hold the child safely We have a wriggler who would happily escape anything he is put in.

Our high chair has adjustable waist and shoulder straps. It also has a plastic piece between the legs which prevents him doing his "submarine" trick. Having a tilting back was useful for when feeding medicine and also liquids.

Thinking of ours, I think when DS was 6 months the tray was a little high for him, but a booster cushion would of probably helped (but we were not doing BLW at first).

We have the Mothercare Picnic highchair.

just get the ikea one, it costs buttons and is perfect for blw. it's easy to clean, has a clear lip around the tray, no shoulder straps, just waist, but as it's a bucket they stay in.

We've got a tripp trapp which is fabulous (in fact we have 2, one for each DD) Very easy to wipe clean and takes up no more room than a chair - plus looks like a chair so not hideous in the kitchen.

The rest of mumsnet will recommend this which I've used in the past and agree tis fab, but I'd be tripping over the legs all the time. And DD1 (whose nearly 4) certainly wouldn't still be in it!!

tripp trapp good but expensive. also unstable if child pushes off table leg. likewise babydan. i have never, ever tripped over the legs, nor has anyone else i know, and my four year old is happy on her equally cheap tall chair from ikea, the cost of both together don't come to a fraction of the tripp-trapp.

We have one of these It's brilliant because you can take it with you if you go out (although I've never used the cover to take lunch with us because we BLW so DS eats what we do) and use it when the DC get older as a booster seat.

It has a good tray and no shoulder straps and fits on one of your own chairs so it doesn't take up any room if you're short on space.

pookamoo · 08/02/2010 11:54

They need to be able to reach the tray easily, and to be able to sit up straight.

We've found when out and about that some of them are really laid back, and DD couldn't reach the tray as she's diddy. We have a wooden Tomy booster seat which is attached to a normal dining chair. The only thing I don't like about it is the tray could be a bit bigger.

So~:

Upright
Big tray
Easy to reach
Harness straps

The Ikea antilop looks good to me.

MrsChemist · 08/02/2010 12:17

Thank you everyone. The ikea one looks good. Can you disassemble it? Our kitchen is tiny, so it would need to be put-away-able.

i suppose it depends on the height of the table, we can fit ours in tho' with the tray off.
my site is babyledweaning.blogware.com/blog but most of the action takes place on the forum these days. click the link on the lhs of the page. wrt finger food, rice cakes are a good start for most, steamed carrot sticks, that sort of thing, although i couldn't be bothered second time round and really did just let dd2 loose on what we were having.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 08/02/2010 12:22

you can disassemble, the legs pop out. but it would be a pita to do three times a day, imo. you might have to get a fold-up one (which are ime pretty rotten). or hang on a minute, you should get a booster seat if you have normal wooden chairs.

MrsChemist · 08/02/2010 12:38

My friend is coming to pick me up soon, so I'll have to break the news to her that we'll possibly be off to ikea (she loves it really).

thanks again

The fisher price one I linked to fits under a normal table. I've taken it with me to restaurants and it fitted under those tables too.

I can't recommend it highly enough. It really has been fab.

MrsJamin · 08/02/2010 13:11

I found the Handysitt bloody brilliant in our small house, just sits on a normal dining chair and sits DS up at the table to eat with everyone else. also means that you don't need to buy an additional travel highchair or booster seat later on. Those fisher price ones are great but the Handysitt folds flat so it's very easy to store and transport.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 08/02/2010 16:50

oh yes, i love those handysitt ones. and isn;t there one that attaches to the table itself? they have them in wagamama, i think phil and teds or someone equally unlikely make them.

BertieBotts · 08/02/2010 17:02

Basically most highchairs, the tray is designed for older children so with a 6 month old baby it comes up to their armpits.

I have got the Fisher Price healthy care booster seat - it comes with a tray, waist straps only (but is very tight with tray on smallest setting so DS couldn't climb out at all) and the tray is low enough for a 5 month old.

We got the Rainforest version which comes with a clip on play tray, excellent for while they are waiting. I got a good deal on it at argos (they don't stock it any more) but at normal price it is more than the ikea antilop.

When they get older you can take the tray off and use it at the table. Doesn't take up extra room, as it fits under the table. Tray fits in dishwasher or sink. Three height settings so should last until DS can sit on a chair. Easy to take on holiday/to grandparents etc. All in all, my best baby buy, I think!
