tripp trapp harness/bar

I bought DS2 a Tripp Trapp, having been v pleased with DS1's. However, this version is slightly different. DS1's has a high, rounded back, and straps which fasten round the waist. I did get a wooden bar with it when I bought it, but he was quite old (maybe 11mths) so I just used the straps , which slot into the holes where the backrest bit goes, IYSWIM, and are held in place by the backrest.
DS2's TT has no harness, just a wooden bar which seems to provide rather a narrow space for seating the baby. We began using it when he was about 6mths, and he was already too big to be slipped in and out behind the bar (his thighs got stuck), so we have to yank the bar out every time whe put him in/take him out. I'm not sure this is what you're really meant to do.

I've looked on the Stocke website, and haven't seen anything like the simple harness setup we had for DS1. The baby set has a plastic bar, perhaps allowing more leeway for the baby, but which I didn't get in the "baby set" I paid for when buying the chair.

It seems to me that in a few months DS2 will not really fit behind the bar, and the TT will be unusable until he is old enough to use it w/o any restraints.

What do other MNers with TT's have/do? TIA.

Can you not just use the harness? That's what we did. We never had the baby set.

Feierabend · 22/01/2010 08:48

Ours came with something like the baby set, but with a wooden bar. It's perfect, I don't like harnesses, neither in highchairs nor in buggies. We used it until DD1 was old enough to sit on a chair unsecured, can't remember, maybe 18 months old or so? I'd go for the baby set. Can't imagine what the wooden bar looks like that you describe though, have you got a picture?

AuldAlliance · 22/01/2010 08:48

Thanks, Lubyloo.
I couldn't tell from the photos on the site whether the harness attached to the seat itself or to the baby bar.

Oh if he's too big to be slipped in and out behind the bar, you should be able to adjust the bar a little?

mistlethrush · 22/01/2010 08:49

Our Trip Trap sounds like your first one. Can't you just swap them so that older child gets the new version and younger child has the benefit of the otherset up that worked for you?

Feierabend · 22/01/2010 08:49

Oh Auld, it's you! I hadn't noticed

Lubyloo · 22/01/2010 08:50

It attaches to the seat with plastic fixings that come with the harness.

Feierabend · 22/01/2010 08:51

I think mistlethrush has found the perfect solution there actually

AuldAlliance · 22/01/2010 08:58

Sorry Fei, x-posted.
I've taken a photo, but the battery on my camera died before I could upload it, so I'm recharging it and will post it in a mo.
I measured the space between the bar and the cushion: there is 16cms depth.
Can you slip your DD in and out behind the bar, Fei? I just can't get DS2's chubby thighs to bend in behind it so that he is sitting down...

The bar is pretty much like the one in the photos Lubyloo linked to, actually. Except that the child in that pic is svelte and has room between his tummy and the bar.

Blimey, sorry. Something weird going on with my computer, my posts are appearing ages after I send them.
Thanks for all the replies!

Good idea, mistlethrush. Suspect DS1 will object, so will arm myself for battle.

Fei, I can't adjust the bar. Maybe I have set the whole thing up wrong.

Big it up for him - he's getting the 'new' one, he's the big boy and doesn't need the baby bits etc etc...!

Feierabend · 22/01/2010 09:51

Auld, yes 16cm, I just measured mine too. We don't use the cushion to sit on, just the cushion at the back. I have no trouble putting H in, maybe because I can slide her feet forward over the wooden seat? And you're right, we can't adjust our bar either, I thought you might have a slightly different set up but from the photo your Tripp Trapp is exactly the same as ours. DD1 had no trouble sitting behind the bar until well over a year old.

But still think swopping chairs is the best solution really!

AuldAlliance · 22/01/2010 11:41

Thanks, Fei. You may well be right about it being easier to put him in if I can slide him on the wood.
Will start pysch campaign to convince DS that swapping chairs is a fantastic plan.

From your photo it looks as though you have the seat plate set a little too deep.

The idea is to have a very shallow seat so that the child can have bent knees and properly supported feet on the foot plate.

The distance between the back of the child's knee and bottom is actually v small so the seat does look unfeasably shallow, but that is the correct way to set it up. You should also be able to easily slip him into the seat from behind if the setting is right. You really shouldn't have to take the rail off at all when getting him in or out (that sounds like a real PITA for you!)

HTH

AuldAlliance · 01/02/2010 11:48

Aha, thanks teaandcake. I'll get the seat plate shifted.
Though my powers of persuasion being what they are, DS1 has been perstering me all weekend: "when are we going to swap seats so I have the one that's not for babies?"

THANK YOU!
Have swapped seats (to please DS1) but most importantly have shifted the seat plate back (doh, why did I not think of this???), removed manky seat cushion and DS2 slips in and out fairly easily. So have dug up the bar that came with DS1's chair, and DS2 is all geared up, while DS1 feels proud to be in the "non-baby chair".
Easy peasy.

This is probably a distant memory for most of you but this was very helpful! Thanks.
