Tripp Trapps and tipping over??

I am just about to buy my six month old DS a tripp trapp and 99% sure it's the chair for us.... but have just seen a worrying video of one tipping over on you tube and now feel a bit anxious. Everything else I've heard about the tripp trapp is positive and I'm not fussed about the price, I just want to know it will be safe. Can anyone reassure me? Thank you!

I have 2 tripp trapps and have not had a problem with them tipping. I would think it was possible though if the seat and foot board were pushed too far back.

we have ours on a 'slidey' laminate floor, and DS is currently enjoying pushing himself back from the table! It's his latest game.

But it's a bit annoying, so we toyed with the idea of putting him on a non-stick mat. Tried that (without DS in it). Accident waiting to happen! Very easy to tip up if pushing backwards on it.

Aparently it's like that on carpet too? But only basing that on what I've heard.

But we do really love the chair. Really worth having.

tbh i think pretty much any chair could be pushed over if they can get enough leverage with feet.

we certainly found with ds2 though, that although he could push against the table, he couldn't push far enough to actually tip back right over

We have three - one for each of my boys. My eldest has used his for 8 years. We have never had one tip over. HOWEVER, we have always had laminate floors. I would imagine if you had carpeting, it would be possible for them to tip.

IsItMeOr · 14/01/2010 21:52

We love our Ikea Antilop...bought after seeing the youtube video of TrippTrapp tipping over. We have carpet.

Hulababy · 14/01/2010 21:54

We have a TT. Got it when DD was 5 months old and she is now 7y9m. It gets almost daily use, and has been used by many visiting children of differeing ages.

Never had any isues with tipping, regardless of it is was on carpet or laminate.

Obviously you still need to supervise, as you would any chair.

I thoroughly recommend the TT.

Hulababy · 14/01/2010 21:55

I reckon any chair could be tipped over IF a child really tried too. But, hnestly, the TT is ffasr more stablle looking than many.

CMOTdibbler · 14/01/2010 21:56

I've got a TT, and DS is 3.5 years old - has never tipped it even though he pushes it round the kitchen to use as a step stool as well

feedthegoat · 14/01/2010 22:00

Ds has never tipped his though it has always been close to a wall.

I think it is as stable as any chair. After all, any 4 legged chair can be tipped if you push backwards against a table the right way. I would have thought it is always a possibility with any chair pushed up to a table.

PacificDogwood · 14/01/2010 22:01

We also have 3 - first one was a hand-me-down, the other 2 we bought because we liked the first one so much !

IMO tipping can really only happen if seat/foot board set much too far forward or back ie extremes of where they are possible to be installed. With undue force, obviously any chair will fall.

DS3 22 months does push himself away from the table BTW (on wooden floor), but has never come even close to tipping himself over.

I'd go for it again.

We have TT. DD is 2 and finally tipped it yesterday pushing on the table with her arms....Luckily I caught it before her head hit the floor.

Now the chair is positioned against a wall so can not tip it again.

DD has been tipping the chair pushing on the table with her arms since she was 13/14 months. This was whilst I fed her and most of the time it would skid back and not tip - we have lino floor. However, every now and then the corners stick and it tips over.

I wrote to Stokke to point this out and they told me I was not supervising her closely enough. I sent them the link to the utube and heard nothing back. I believe you can buy tracks to stop tipping.....

Should also mention that dd tips highchairs in restaurants if we dont hold them down with our feet.

Good luck - I still like the TT. Its a nice chair.

Thanks everyone! I am going to go ahead and get one now and looking forward to getting it and lots of mealtimes together!

Inspired by this thread I have just purchased my 3rd Tripp Trapp, in preparation for DC3 .

I have been really lucky - we have a 2nd hand type shop at the end of the road and I bought DS2's chair there for £15 and this one was £25.

StarSailors · 26/03/2010 10:15

As long as you have the Tripp Trapp set up right for the child, then it would be really hard to tip. You can read or even watch a video on the stokke website of how to do it.

In the youtube video, the seat is too deep for the child, thus he is able to get his legs up with enough strength to push back. If it was set up properly, i'm sure it would be virtually impossible to tip, although as others have said, any chair can be tipped by a child who is determined enough to do it!
