Struggling to wash baby, any links to bath cushions so he doesn’t slip? Also any advice on how to wash a baby’s bum alone, I’m finding it tricky as baby is wriggly. Any links please

We used the angel care bath seat which we put muslins over x

It's ok, OP, your baby isn't quite as easy to break as it can feel like in the early days!

I would get something like this:

https://www.johnlewis.com/angelcare-soft-touch-bath-support-white-grey/p5057097?s_ppc=2dx_mixed_fashion_BAU&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20155423421&gbraid=0AAAAAD2el1yURFu_Ws10DzCnHLapZBWoC&gclid=Cj0KCQiA-NHLBhDSARIsAIhe9X2jSzi2JoOdhu1DkQDDz2IS7wlG6AZrSasSLcL9ezJXlXGmYsk5GzUaAuEhEALw_wcB

My tip would be to have a soft jug on hand, something like this

https://www.munchkin.co.uk/products/rinse-blue?srsltid=AfmBOorV4cqDkPMgJLnc5p6-c2suhvSkXT04zWNJXCbHrk7GnKlcqwdV

Gently wash your baby's front, legs and arms, then tip your baby gently forward onto your arm holding their head out of the water, wash their back and bum, and then rinse off with the jug and lift straight out to dry. Don't put them back in the baby rest after doing their back and bum as the baby rest will have got cold and it'll be a bit of an unwelcome surprise for the baby!

I just put an inch or so of water in the main bath and laid them flat on a normal bath mat. They could kick away and I could wash them. But I never used soap, turned them into slippery little eels!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 24/01/2026 19:06

You can use just a little drop of something like Child's Farm baby bath in the bathwater.

KvotheTheBloodless · 24/01/2026 19:07

It's all about hand/arm position. Put your arm under the baby's shoulders and grip their opposite arm/shoulder in your hand. That way they can't slip out of your grip. Also make sure the bath isn't too deep.

You've got this OP! A non-slip mat can help too.

I always had baths with my DD when she was a baby. Was so much easier to wash her and really nice bonding time too

rubyslippers · 24/01/2026 19:22

Get in the bath with your baby
or put a towel at the bottom of the bath

Bumbers · 24/01/2026 20:15

I loved our Schnuggle bath for both my kids. Highly recommend

Pootles34 · 24/01/2026 20:28

I found kitchen sink easiest - not bending over and less room for flailing.

Geronimode · 24/01/2026 22:23

Have a bath with the baby or bathe baby in the sink.

Angel care bath seat. Worth every penny.

But you need soap???

Unicornsandprincesses · 24/01/2026 22:29

Schnuggle bath with 2x kids

I wash their bums out of the bath, on a towel/changing mat on the floor, with cotton wool. & dry with either the towel or a muslin

Golololo · 24/01/2026 22:30

Kitchen sink in a washing up bowl .

JamMakingWannaBe · 24/01/2026 22:48

As above - have a bath with baby or bathe baby in the kitchen sink.

No you don't, not with a really little baby. It's not great for their skin, just water is fine. And once they are a little older and less floppy you can start using a very mild body wash and them slipping away is less of a concern.

Paaseitjes · 25/01/2026 16:10

The first few weeks, I sat in the bottom of the shower with the baby on my lap

Same here. I’d shower and then start the bath and DH would bring baby in for a bath with me.

I think I was told no soap for first 4 weeks. I only lasted two weeks before using a teeny tiny bit of ph balanced organic baby soap. I just washed and rinsed one body part at a time so they didn’t get all slippery.

Definitely get in the bath with the baby! Such lovely cuddle time 🥰 one of my favourite things to do with a newborn!
