DH can't get over the price of the Tripp trapp, can anyone recommend a decent highchair which is suitable from birth. Thanks.

Chicco noodle?

northernlurker · 06/07/2013 21:42

Oh sure she can buy one but it will be an expensive way to discover the baby is grumpy not because of seating preference but because she wants to be held or her grumpy time and mum's supper time perfectly co-incide.

LimeLeaffLizard · 06/07/2013 22:00

I have one of these. Bought it a while back for DS2 and I've had my money's worth.

DreamySleepyNightySnoozySnooze · 06/07/2013 22:16

But it won't be a waste of money Northern, because she'll still want a highchair at some point in the future! She'll just be buying it early and possibly storing it away until weaning time!

chickenfactory · 06/07/2013 22:18

Thanks for the replies.
Thanks themobster I will look at the chicco. And the bloom.
In reply she's miserable on the floor in the kitchen, likes her bouncer in the middle of the bed (always supervised- can finally dry my hairGrin) or in the living room.
I do want something I want rather than she needs but surely as she gets bigger but not yet weaning it'll be nicer/easier to interact. Ebf so won't be feeding in it.

I hope you find one that works. Just be aware it might not be a magic solution. The novelty of the bouncer in the bed might be just that - that it is a short period. You may find that she still isn't happy in the kitchen, particularly at 'cranky time' before dinner.

Totally agree that you don't need a high chair from birth but sometimes nice to have baby at table level. We had a stand for the carseat you attached it using the same adaptors as the pram base. The stand also worked with the carry cot so we used it instead of a moses basket so despite being a bit expensive (c.£80) it worked quite well. It also folded flat and we were always going to have carseat/ pram so it was nice not to have to deal with another chunky bit of baby kit.

We have a fisher price high chair, the current equivalent is the rainforest healthy care high chair. I believe it is suitable from 4 months, mine has done almost continuous service for 8.5 years, DD2 is 2.9 and still uses it regularly in the kitchen.

It is height adjustable, it reclines to 3 different positions, the tray can be removed to use at the table. The only downside is that although the legs fold, the seat doesn't, but that is why it is suitable from such a young age. The seat has "wings" that curve inwards that are really supportive.

mikkii · 06/07/2013 22:27

Oh, and my kitchen will seem huge when we finally stop using it, it has been up in the kitchen for all but about a year of living in this house (6 years)!

pinkbear82 · 06/07/2013 22:29

I agree with nightfall - dd 4 weeks old and we have the trip trap with the newborn add on - she loves it. it's a safe place for her to be when I'm doing things - just like her bouncy chair but higher up and far more social if we are at the table etc. And it's up out of the dogs reach!

of course I don't use it for feeding her - nor do I use it for hours on end. not every baby wants constant bouncing!

JollyShortGiant · 07/07/2013 06:42

We put the bouncy chair on the table quite a lot when DS was very small.

Our Tripp Trapp has been wonderful. DS is 2.3 and we are still using it for 3 meals a day every day. It will last years longer yet. We will be getting another for DC2 as it has been absolutely worth it.

surroundedbyblondes · 07/07/2013 06:53

Surprised at the assumption of several people that high chair = weaning.

We bit the bullet and bought Tripp trapp chairs for our DC. They have been well worth it and the chairs have been well-used. When DD2 was born they came out with the newbirn set. I was hugely sceptical but it was excellent. DD2 could be at the same level as us when we were eating, but also if I was doing something like crafts with DD1.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 07/07/2013 15:03

I think part of the reason people respond quite strongly to threads like this is that there have been quite a few threads posted by pregnant women who believe that their babies will happily sit in a high high chair whilst dinner is prepared and through an adult meal from birth. Which I am sure happens, but is very, very rare. Since the types of high chair that are suitable from birth tend to be v expensive, people don't want them to waste money on the assumption that that will happen.

northernlurker · 07/07/2013 16:21

Yes that's it exactly. Unfortunately most babies prefer to be held rather than sit in a chair - even a very lovely one Grin

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 07/07/2013 17:11

DD1 wouldn't even be held. She had to be in the Kari-me sling for the first three months or she screamed. My friends joked that they had never seen her face. Then she spent three months where she hated being held at all (unless on the move in a sling) and wanted to lie on a blanket on the floor.

Thankfully at four she is now a bit more flexible Grin

chickenfactory · 08/07/2013 22:23

Will try the car seat on the pram first (buying a stand for it would defeat the purpose of looking for something cheaper than the Tripp trapp.) also bought a sling which will hopefully free up a hand or two occasionally. She might like the bouncy chair on the floor this week by virtue of it being cooler down there.
Obviously there is a limit to how long she can spend in the car seat, I'm assuming this would be similar in the newborn sets for high chars?

chickenfactory · 08/07/2013 22:23

And she's 4weeks, just realised I never answered that.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 08/07/2013 22:26

Yes, they shouldn't sit for too long. At four weeks she is likely to get bored long before that limit is up though so I wouldn't worry (in the car they are often asleep, so less of an issue!).

Graciescotland · 08/07/2013 23:55

you might be able to find a cheap one on ebay; travel system and carseat completely knackered after 2 dc but stand in immaculate condition!
