Are these any good?

Hi,

We're looking for a travel highchair, actually we're looking for a normal highchair too....anyway- are these any good? They seem really unstable, but surely they're fine? I also wonder if they fit on a range of chairs and as they aren't a booster seat in that they sit the child higher up at the table, are they a waste of time? This website seems to say you an use them from 8 months, but on the box it says from 6months.

Thanks

My DS is only 4.5mo and loves his! Granted he is a big baby - was 9lb2oz birth weight and is on 95th centile for height but he sits securely in it. You can use on any chair, we've used it in 3 or 4 different places and had no probs. The only downside is that they don't provide any height so not really practical in this sense. Would strongly recommend otherwise though!

We've got a mothercare travel booster which I love

The advantage is that as well as using up at the table you can just have a chair as it has it's own tray. And you can use on the floor for picnics, on the beach etc, it's fab

Sorry to hijack your thread but I'm looking for one to bring on holidays and think the Grobag one is very pretty and really compact. I was going to buy one until I realised that my 8 month DS wouldn't be able to reach up to the table with it [Hmm]

The Mothercare one looks very practical but not so portable. We're going abroad at Easter and have so much baby stuff to pack.

I'm tempted not to bother buying one and hoping that restaurants and hotels over there (Italy) will have high chairs.

We have two of the Mothercare ones linked to above, and they fold quite flat and come with their own little storage/carry bag.

DeeLite · 19/03/2011 10:13

Geepers, do you reckon they wouldn't take up too much room in a suitcase? Can we leave the tray at home or is that essential?

I would say the 6/8month thing is that the baby needs to be able to sit unsupported. Some will by 6 months, most will by 8 months. DS didn't until 9 months - he would have fallen sideways in that I reckon.

I think the ones that clip onto the table are probably better, or a booster. DS has the fisher price one (we got the rainforest version) and it's great - he could sit up in it at 4 months and play with the toys for a while, he still uses it now at 2.5.

Oh or there are inflatable ones you can get for travelling :)

BertieBotts · 19/03/2011 10:23

inflatable one

DeeLite · 19/03/2011 10:48

Ah yes, now I think about it, my SIL has one of these. Thanks BertieBotts. I'm off shopping.

I made one of the first ones. It was great for keeping in the bottom of the nappy bag just in case. But as mentioned they don't provide any height so not very good for more social occasions or long term use. If you're feeding your child or you can keep passing them things to munch on rather than help themselves they're fine though.
We borrowed one of the inflatable ones (Actually ours wasn't inflatable but was the same style) when we went on holiday and DD was a bit older and feeding herself. It worked brilliantly.
