Guest post from Nick Clegg: 'The economic rescue is working - but we know families are still feeling the squeeze'

The official figures are in: Britain’s economy is now larger than it was before the financial crash hit in 2008. There is still a way to go to get us where we need to be, with many British families still feeling the squeeze – but this is good news. It shows the rescue is working.

This is why the Liberal Democrats came into coalition in the first place, to provide the strong and stable government Britain needed to get back on its feet again. Four years on and Britain is going from strength to strength.

According to the latest IMF estimates, the UK will be the fastest growing economy in the G7 in 2014. We have more people in work than ever before, with 2 million more people working in the private sector than in 2010. The deficit is also down by a third: we’re borrowing around £3,000 less per family.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work and sacrifices of millions of families. Across the country, there are countless stories of workers in the private and public sector accepting pay cuts or pay freezes to prevent redundancies, keep businesses afloat and maintain essential public services.

In government, the Liberal Democrats have focused on doing everything we can to help Britain’s families weather this storm. The crucial question that every parent asks when weighing up whether to work or take on extra hours is: how much of my wages will I keep after I've paid for costs like tax, childcare, travel and so on?

To make that decision easier, we've secured a ÂŁ800 tax cut for millions of ordinary people by raising the point at which you pay income tax to ÂŁ10,000 - with a further increase to ÂŁ10,500 next April.

The credibility we've gained by sticking to Britain’s economic plan has helped keep interest rates historically low, saving families money on their mortgage bills.

From this September, every family with young children will benefit from our plan to provide free school meals to pupils in reception classes, year one and year two – ensuring they get a healthy lunch and saving you around £400 for your household budget every year.

Also, if you’re a working parent with children under 12, we’re helping with childcare – from autumn next year, Government will contribute 20% of your childcare costs up to £10,000 a year. This covers parents working full-time and part-time and, for the first time ever, those mums and dads who run their own businesses. This will provide the equivalent of £2,000 per child, per year for every working family, except those on extremely high wages.

We've increased the hours of funded early-education available to every family with a 3 and 4-year-old to 15 hours a week, as well as 2-year-olds from poorer families.

We’re also making it easier for you to organise your childcare support in a way that works best for your family. From April next year, we’re introducing our new shared parental leave arrangements, enabling new parents to carve up the leave they’re entitled to with greater freedom and flexibility. We've already extended the right to request flexible working to everyone, to help boost that army of family members and friends you call on to help with childcare.

I want to help ensure that Britain’s children, whatever their family circumstances or background, get the best possible start in life. So, building on the success of our £2.5 billion Pupil Premium, next year, we’re giving state-funded early years providers an additional £300 to spend on every 3 and 4 year-old from poorer families to support their development further. This is one of the best possible investments we can make in our country’s future.

Together, we’re getting our economy back on track. There’s still a lot to do. But, as Britain moves from rescue to renewal, I'm determined to ensure that every single person has the opportunities and support they need to get on and build the life they want.

Oh, I also made reference to the fact that the bankers, aided by zero government regulation, knowingly caused the crash, not the people being punished.
Is that it?

Nick clegg and the lib dems have thrown away their credibility by their pact with the devil Tories.
They will never be forgiven.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your comments. We've deleted some posts that we felt were overly personal or mean, rather than focusing on the guest post itself or the issues it raised.

If you'd like to repost your post (without the personal attack) please get in touch with us and we can send you the text.

Will he be back at any point to respond to the very valid points people have made or are we just pissing in the wind yet again?

Grin MEAN??? Tell you whats mean - not automatically renewing our benefits (which USED TO BE normal procedure) or telling us we needed to do it about two weeks before Xmas 2013. Which meant we survived on ÂŁ23 until the end of December. Then it not being back dated because it was a 'fresh' claim.....not giving us any help with 'permission' to go to the food banks and informing us there was no such thing as crisis loans anymore. Thats MEAN - in fact I would go as far as to say thats EVIL.

If you dont like to hear the truth dont ask the question.

Normal fuming will now be resumed.

Yes, shabs, and worse than not renewing is informing IN ARREARS when they've decided to stop your ESA. First you know of any decision being reached on an ATOS medical is a payment not happening - paperwork appears two weeks later saying we decided against you.

When you appeal, it takes a heck of a lot longer than that for them to restart payments.

And agree Madrigals, that was a Party Political Broadcast, and our post merely commentary.

We're not expecting Nick to turn up and actually respond to us.

I posted originally because I was incensed by what he had written. I assumed that it was a 'statement' from his press office and had no expectation he would ever read the replies but it was nice to vent my feelings.
I admit I was more personal and aggressive than I would ever be to anyone else on MN but surely a politician is fair game? Criticism and attacks go with the territory.
I have already restated what I regard as the important part of my deleted post but I would like MNHQ to invite him to address the perfectly legitimate issues that have been raised.

He is a public figure and the author, or co-author of the parlous state we are living in now, and the non-future our children are facing. He has made promises which he had o intention of keeping. He has lied and cheated to claw his way to (not quite) the top. We are his victims. We are the ones who pay in blood.

And when he publishes a load of propaganda on a public website, you say we can't be mean?

MNHQ, for the first time in nearly 10years, I am ashamed of you. Sad

I am more angry than I have ever been (in my long life) about the way the Lib Dems betrayed the British people by getting into bed with the Tories. How dare you claim that the economic rescue is working Biscuit when the only people who are secure and comfortable are the very people who caused the crash in the first place.

Mean? Mean???

Why do you insist on treating us like children, MN? This is La Mensch and Tony Benn all over again. You post up patronising, self-aggrandising bullshit written by someone who hasn't got a bloody clue, and when MNers call them out on it, the wrist-slapping and post-deleting starts. Every time.

People are angry, Clegg. Really, really fucking angry. I wish there could be a revolution in this country, I honestly do.

I was not personal in my post. I don't think I was "mean" either, and I absolutely addressed the issues in the guest post. I don't need the original text, I know exactly what I want to say:

I did not choose to sacrifice, or take a pay freeze (pay cut in real terms) for the good of the country. This is something that has been done to me by the Coalition. I also do NOT accept that public services have been preserved.
This is why I went on strike with my union, along with a million others.

The Sure Start centre I used to go to with my baby son kept me sane, as a lone parent with no family nearby. I think I may have gone under without them. That centre, along with hundreds of others is now closed.
Libraries, once a lifeline for people without the funds to buy their own books/newspapers/ internet access have closed by the dozen.

University fees are extortionate, and I dread my son ending up with tens of thousands of pounds in debt, well into his forties.

If I become unemployed (which is likely with all the redundancies lately) I can be expected to give my labour, for free, to, for example, Poundland or Tesco, in exchange for the JSA I have paid taxes towards since the age of 16.
No Income tax on 10500 per year? Woop-de-doo. Ever tried living on 10k a year? How about bringing in a real living wage? Do you realise how pitiful wages are in most places in the UK? Do you ever actually spend any time in Sheffield?
I quote "
The credibility we've gained by sticking to Britain’s economic plan has helped keep interest rates historically low, saving families money on their mortgage bills."
What if you can't get a mortgage, because rock bottom interest rates for years have put buying a home out of reach for any ordinary working family?
And saving is pointless, so only those with family money can ever become home owners now. And Help to Buy is fuelling another bubble, and getting people into yet more debt they won't be able to service. A bit like the whole sub-prime debacle. Wow, de-ja-vu.

Free school meals for all? Why? Why not free school meals for low earning families, like mine? My son is now in KS2, so I won't benefit from this at all. It should be means tested and is a total waste of money.

Do you really think you can throw the people of this country a few crumbs and expect them to suddenly forget that they can no longer access front line services for their elderly, their children, their vulnerable and disabled relatives?

Are we supposed to applaud that the cuts to the fire service are dangerous and will directly cause people to die?

Please tell me why every cut, from the bedroom tax to the changes in disability benefits has directly affected the poorest and the weakest, and why the bankers who created the deficit in the first place have got off scott free?
Or is this too mean and personal a question?

Keep posting people. Clegg's advisors are certainly reading these reactions to this spectacularly ill judged bit of communications.

The level of anger here says to me that the election campaign will need to be be four weeks of party workers trying to keep Clegg's away from "civilians". Those Sharon Storer moments will keep popping up on the news otherwise.

Well I did notice that Labour suddenly discovered today there needs to be debate about NHS privatisation.

Which is a bit rich given they were the ones who set it up in the first place (ditto benefits cuts and sanctions).

But I have idly wondered if they clocked this thread - this being MN an' all.
