Remember Margot? They've found a match!

After an amazing worldwide appeal for new stem cell donors, we are delighted to tell you that we now have a confirmed stem cell donor for Margot and can move forward with her bone marrow transplant.

Please do have a look over here for the story so far - we were searching for a perfect match for Margot and whilst we didn’t find her perfect match, we are assured by the medical team at Great Ormond Street Hospital that the person who's come forward is an ‘adequate match’, and that it's a good option for us to pursue.

We've decide to seize this opportunity and avoid any delay in Margot’s treatment.

We know very little about the donor, but we thank them - from the bottom of our hearts - for agreeing to donate bone marrow and to meet the timetable proposed by the doctors. We hope, very much, that we can meet one day.

We also want to thank everyone that has responded to our appeal and registered and shared our plight with others around the world. Together we have sparked an astonishing and unprecedented public response: over 50,000 people to date in the UK alone have expressed an interest in becoming potential stem cell donors.

The benevolence of so many thousands of people has already substantially increased the worldwide pool of potential stem cell donors - and we believe and hope that there is a growing momentum and ongoing worldwide interest for this to continue.

It’s simply a numbers game: the greater the pool, the more lives can be saved, just like Margot’s.

There are around 1,600 people annually in the UK in desperate need of a stem cell donation, and more than 37,000 people worldwide. If you haven’t already registered please do so, and if you have, please encourage friends and family to do so too - and don’t forget to return your swabs!

We are most grateful to Delete Blood Cancer UK and DKMS for all their support.

On behalf of Margot and all our family, thank you!

Excellent!

Lovely news. I've been on the bone marrow donors register for years as a regular blood donor. I now need a stem cell transplant (and fortunately I have a match) so I'm always pleased when campaigns like this encourage more people to register.

smeraldina · 08/02/2014 23:45

Wonderful. Every ounce of love and good wishes to Margot. Have just registered.

I think it's important to say that the Anthony Nolan register has a much younger age limit than Delete Blood Cancer UK. If you were too old for the AN one, check out the DBC UK as you could be eligible.

YoniMatopoeia · 09/02/2014 11:11

lovely. Will check out whether I am young enough for some of the other registers, ad I am too old for AN.

Solo · 09/02/2014 12:53

Me too Yoni. By a long way!! but at nearly 50, I am still young enough to join the DBC one and that is a good feeling in more than one way! :)

YoniMatopoeia · 09/02/2014 13:02

Ooh. I am 44 so should be able to then

Solo · 09/02/2014 13:15

Yes! I need to ask them a q? about my health before I apply, but as it was always something I wanted to do, I really hope they'll say yes. Especially as I have quite a few different nationalities running through my marrow!
