We did it as a school when I was younger (we were boarders). I know people who have done it recently too. We went to the local nursing home but I know people that have advertised in the local free retirement newspaper or magazine aimed at retirees. There are so many people out there without access to their grandkids. My friends adopted grandpa is fabulous. He takes them out and comes round for dinner and all the holidays. The kids love it and he is the happiest he has ever been he says. Go for it!

i am trying to set up a scheme to do this, strated from an old adopt a granny thread. cat me if you want

Addendum:
at the weekend I went to opr village gala day and discovered that there will be a new 'good neighbour' scheme set up soon. They were taking names of people interested in having a good neighbour or being a good neighbour. One of the 'tasks' was 'providing companionship' to an elderly peson. I've put my name down - this might be a way of meeting an elderly person or else you could contact your local council to see if they do something similar. All volunteers have to have a CRB check btw.

And I am going to add something about this on my babysitting website (on a virtually free basis, at cost only). Let me know if a scheme would be helpful
good luck

Many years ago our church asked for people who could offer a lift to an elderly person. We volunteered and although at that time our kids had a granny we started giving Annie a lift. We remained friends with her until she died and she was the adopted granny in our family. She had a large family as well but we were treated as one of them. We were at all each others celebrations including weddings, christenings birthday parties. She used to knit Aran sweaters and they are still going round the family especially the kids ones. It was a really happy relationship so hopefully some of you can find your own "Annie"

Has anyone started an adopt a granny scheme in the North East, or anywhere at all?

Dalex · 05/06/2010 20:01

My kids rarely see their grandparents as they live too far away. I'd love to adopt a granny in Surrey.
