Just wanted to say Hi, 1st time here although looked at site before because dd told me about it. DP and I moved to Australia in July 2006 leaving behind 2 DD, 1 DS and 1 DGS for him and 2 DD and 1 SIL for me. (no1 DD & SIL found out they were expecting their 1st just days before we left England. We made it back to England for DGS christening when he was 5 months old and we are expecting the whole family plus neice (6 kids between ages of 17 & 26 + 2 baby grandsons)to stay over Xmas and New year. CANT WAIT!!!! 37 degrees here at the mo so stocking up on high factor sunscreen to protect whole family is more important here than thinking of Xmas itself. Any other long distance grans out there... I live for emailed photos, long phone calls and webcam chats with my beautiful dd's and dgs.

Hi there,

I am not a long distance Granny, but my Mum is I will give this thread a bump, maybe there are some more long distance grans around tonight.

We live in Germany and my parents are at home in Scotland. I know how hard it is for them being so far away from their GC. We are lucky because Scotland-Germany is well connected with cheap airlines so we see them every 6 - 8 weeks.

We bought 2 webcams for their Christmas last year. They love to see their GC and it is much easier for the DCs when they see Granny and Grandad than just on the phone.

my mum lives in canada and I am in the uk with 3 of her granddaughters - we skype several times a week, on the phone, and dd has just started sending ecards to my mum as well. lots of pictures back and forth, and little surprise packages between my girls and mum - it can work ( although I miss her terribly)

Thanks for the messages, Its good to know there are others out there who live away from children and grandchildren. The world seems a small place sometimes with the help of technology but in practice ( 26 hours on a plane) its a long, long way away. It doesn't help that I'm in bed when they are getting on with day to day things and vice versa BUT I know my girls are as adventurous as me and with sil in the RAF it means that dd and dgs will be also traveling wherever they are sent. (dgs was born when they were in Germany!!!) We have become very adept at working around the time differences to keep in touch and the girls know I'm here anytime of the day or night if they want me.

Ag - my mom is in the same boat as you. we are in Scotland and she and my dad are back in Canada. They have only one grandchild and he's here.
i always tell my mom that just because they are far away doesn't mena that they won't be close with their grandchild.
webcams are great. very very hard sometimes, i won't lie about that. but good that my DS can see my parents a few times a week and knows them. he's only just 2 and when they last came to visit a few months ago he ran right up to them in the airport and gave them big hugs.
