Help for mum - using the power of Mumsnet

I am the daughter of a 81 year old lady as well as the mother of two boys and I guess I am what is called the "sandwich generation". The issue for my mum is her social isolation - after having a stroke she has very restricted mobility but can walk with a trolly wheeler. My dad has become her main carer and to put it bluntly they spend too much time together. They do have a small friendship circle but it is all in the place where they used to live so my Mum is reliant on my Dad to see their friends. My mum yearns for some female companionship but doesn't know how to go about making new friends locally. Local social clubs where they play bingo isn't her thing - she needs something more intellectually stimulating. I am sure there must be other daughters like me wanting to help their mums connect with like-minded ladies for friendship and companionship. Any ideas? My mum lives in York.

What about a book group?

Has she tried local U3A?

www.yorku3a.org.uk/

My mum has done some fantastic (cheap) course with them and made some friends.

National Women's Register. Social group for all women. Local groups nationwide. Look up website. Very friendly meetings. I have been a member for 13 years. No pressure to go regularly.
