Hip Op

My mum (mid / late 60s) need a hop op and will need to go into hospital.

I would like to make her a 'bag' with all the essentials, like you do for having a baby.

What would you say would be your essential and what luxuries?

I'm thinking:

  1. nightie (x2) Not PJs as hip will be sore?
  2. Slippers (??) or nice fluffy socks to keep feet hot
  3. Lip salve
  4. Basic toiletries (travel size for convenience)
  5. Small / cheap make up plus small brush / mirror
  6. Purse of coins for vending machines (?)

She will be NHS, I think, and the only time I've been in hospital I've been private, so not really sure what is required re. food.

I know that she is in a reasonable amount of pain and is not looking forward to the op either, so I'd really like to make this easier for her.

My dad is lovely, but (how do I put this nicely!) he's a 70YO bloke who can no more talk about his feelings than I can do a double backflip!! He's finding it touch to talk about this!

ANy advice (especially from any grans who have been through this!) would be so much appreciated.

Thankyou.

How kind of you OP! I have had 3 hip replacements and I think you've got the list about right - I would include something to drink too (squash?). Oh, and towels. Slippers are a must - physios won't let you out of bed without them and they need to be 'sensible'. Not socks though - because she won't be able (allowed) to put them on. A clean nightie for every day she's in - (a) because it's so hot and (b) because her wound will probably leak.

She will be galloping around again before you know it, and all pain-free!!!

A third arm thing for picking things up as well.
