A question for KS1 teachers

I have a DD in Yr1 who is a very good reader. I do not know whether she is on any kind of list, and TBH she is being "stretched" anyway, to quote her teacher, so I dont think it is important; Anyway, teacher wanted a chat yesterday to say that Dds comprehension skills aren't quite keeping up with her reading ability. She was not worried and has given me pointers about questions to ask whilst she reads etc, which I try to do anyway to slow her down a bit. Teacher mentioned definitely level 3 SATs etc and to nip this little problem in the bud now before any gap between reading ability/comprehension gets wider, which is great that she is addressing it. I know what to ask her whilst reading, but just wanted to ask if anyone else has had/ is having this problem ? Its almost as though her actual reading ability is years ahead and her young brain cant quite keep up! Thanks for reading.

I had this with DS in reception. Like you said, the teacher gave me some tips re questions to ask, and also stretched him sideways with books like the 'I wonder why' series. Now in year 1 it's all caught up pretty much by itself and he's a free reader and a very free thinker!

Use the tips she's given you, don't just let her read a book and assume she's understood it all, and be prepared to go back over things if needed.

I think the non-fiction really helped with us - find a subject she's interested in and stratch comprehension in that - we now have a massive dinsosaur obsession as a result!

similar to the asking questions, but could you get her to read a page without interruptions, and then tell you about it in her own words?
