My son is very gifted but not in the G&T group. What shall I do?

My son is 7 and is very gifted in all areas. He can read fluently and often reads long, complicated works to himself (Enid Blyton, etc), can do addition and subtraction to 100 and understands complex scientific principles such as how the earth rotates around the Sun and how a food chain works.

However, I have recently discovered that there is a Gifted and Talented 'club' at his school who meet on Wednesday. He is not part of it and I am angry that his talents have been overlooked and that he is not having the fulfilled and rich education which his gifts demand.

I am going to make an appointment to see the headteacher on Monday morning to ask why he is not included and ask that they re-assess his obviously above average needs.

What else can I do to make sure that the school starts providing for him and his complex needs?

pagwatch · 24/01/2010 15:32

I don't want you to stop posting Christine!

Tell me more

What does your DS enjoy doing at home, and how do you assist him there. And what do you hope G&T will provide to meet his needs.

teasle · 24/01/2010 15:33

Now pagwatch WAS funny

AmazingBouncingFerret · 24/01/2010 15:35

Unfortunately she cant quite see over the steering wheel of the tomy coupe, her car of choice is one of DS's remote control stunt cars, she's quite the daredevil, she has expressed an interest in an abseiling holiday this summer.

Yes Latin is her next "project" after she has finished her Authentic Chinese Cuisine course.

ChristineFrog · 24/01/2010 15:37

Thanks for taking me seriously, Pagwatch.

At home, DS enjoys playing on the DS (although I limit him to playing Brain Training as I don't want his talent wasted). He also likes making up songs which he sings to me and DH (I have recorded a CD of him singing which guests are often delighted to listen to). He loves to sit and draw pictures of nature and the world around him and his concentration is above what I would expect of any child his age - he is often so deeply engrossed in his activity that he does not pay attention to me when I speak to him.

I hope that the school will invite him to join the G&T club and will also provide some foreign language provision for him as it is clear he needs to expand outwards.

Oh and teasle, did you know that swearing is a sign of a limited vocabulary?

Amazing...she may find a short course in Chinese Herbal Medicine useful, especailly at her age. Will look good on the CV. Also if she passes her Advanced driving course, she will be able to join the Institute of Advanced Motorists. Hope that helps.

MrsChemist · 24/01/2010 15:40

That's nothing ABF, my 5mo DS is currently touring the countries universities presenting lectures on Heterotic String Theory

northernlurker · 24/01/2010 15:40

Op - you poor thing. How awful for you. May I suggest you sue the headmaster for injury to feelings? It would also be an idea to write to Ed Balls and perhaps the Pope could also help in recognising your blessed child?

CheeryCherry · 24/01/2010 15:40

Sorry, seriously OP, would you consider publishing the CD? Would be great to download.

thirdname · 24/01/2010 15:41

What do they do in the ds club that your ds is so desperate to do? (Why would you otherwise want to speak to the headmaster) Ds ("top" ) would happily be on the "easiest" table so he can finish work quickly and do something else (like playing with lego or on the computer).

VinegarTits · 24/01/2010 15:42

My ds can write complex computer programs and is now working for IBM as one of their top developers, he is earning £500 a day as one of their freelance consultants, and i have given up my own job as he is now paying the mortgage and all the bills

He works from our office at home, they do not make him go into the office as he wouldnt fit in with the other adults because he is 3

ChristineFrog · 24/01/2010 15:43

Actually, Cherry, I have thought about that - wouldn't it be brilliant to see my son's little seraphic face beaming at me from the shelves of WH Smiths! Maybe I could find out about self publishing, it does seem rather selfish to keep his voice to myself, my family and friends!

VT that is a m a z i n g....am very envious of your status.
However, having a suitably wired house suits me just fine.

rainbowinthesky · 24/01/2010 15:44

Dd can do all those things and she is 6. WHat you've described isnt gifted and talented. Sorry.

MrsChemist · 24/01/2010 15:45

Christine, assuming for a second that this isn't a wind up, what will you do if the head teacher tells you that your son isn't gifted and talented enough to be in the G&T group?

CheeryCherry · 24/01/2010 15:45

OP...10% cut for giving you the idea pls. When it goes multi platinum I Will be very thankful

northernlurker · 24/01/2010 15:45

Christine - call Simon Cowell - he'll be speechless I'm sure.

ChristineFrog · 24/01/2010 15:47

MrsChemist, I can assure you that I am genuine. When I see the headteacher, I will take along with me drawings and stories which DS has written at home. He should therefore be blown away by DS's potential. If he isn't, then I will look at some other primary schools and see whether there provision is more accurately delivered to the children who actually need it.
