Hello,
Can anyone help with any experience/knowledge of gifted education in Wales (particularly primary). Are schools required to have a G&T register as in England?
Thanks.

No Not in Wales. No Gand T scheme in the schools here but they have sets from year 2 onwards I think.

Hi - Yes in Wales we are covered by the same White Paper re Gifted and Talented. Schools are 'grouped' and registered pupils from the 'group' are meant to be given opportunities to learn together for part of the school week. Schools are also meant to have an allocated G + T Teacher (some schools share one) I found some info on this on the WAG site afew weeks ago. I would be very interested in speaking to other parents of G + T Children as NAGC doesn't seem to have a Welsh Branch (my DD is 3)

Thanks for that - there is a south Wales list at the NAGC - there has been some interest expressed in meeting up so I would ask to be added to it.
There is no G and T teacher at my daughter's school, but the SENCO does one hour one to one a week with her and as the classes are mixed age in the Welsh Stream she is able to work with children two years older. I am started to get worried about what will happen when those children leave and was wondering what kind of support there should be.

Is your daughter recieving Welsh Medium education? How old is she? mine is currently in meithrin - i have been enable to secure an accessible 'rising threes' placement within a nursery class for her (which would have afforded her the opportunity to work with older children)
I will certainly add myself to the NAGC list of people in Wales.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but this is exactly the info I am looking for...

My eldest is ahead of his peer group, he is reading books from the Year 4 bookshelves whilst in Year 2, and is similarly ahead in Maths. He appears (from what he tells me) to be the only chid this far ahead in his class. He is also getting bored.

I don't feel that he is being enormously well supported in school. He is in a class of 30, mixed Year 1 and 2, and he is spending a lot of time waiting for other children to "catch up".

I have heard no mention of G&T, don't know whether I should have as I was under the impression that it didn't exist in Wales.

The SENCO spends time every week with children in the "least able" group within the year, but nothing with the "most able".

I don't want him to start messing around in class due to boredom, but at the same time I don't want to go in and look like the uber pushy mother!

He is the eldest of three, and his two younger siblings are ahead of their peers too, so I have a feeling I may be in this for the long haul...

hi,
Speaking with experience of a 17y.o and 7 y.o. G&T there is G&T in N.Wales, however it varies from school to school. Primaries are not really up on it but secondaries throw money at it and there are so many opportunies for teenagers. My advise, from experience, is to keep them happy and stimulated at home because even without support from the primary sector they rocket at secondary school
