Bright preschooler - numeracy help/suggestions wanted

Hi, was hoping someone had some suggestions how to help DD with numeracy skills. She is coming up for 3 1/2.
Her nursery/preschool has picked her out as G&T and her literacy is great - she can read fluently. But we are not really sure how to bring on her numeracy which is apparently also strong. Nursery are being super and told me they are asking round for ideas of how to keep her stimulated this year, and something we could do at home to stretch her numeracy-wise. But any suggestions welcomed. The head mentioned Kumon maths but when I searched mumsnet, people seemed pretty negative!
I would welcome any ideas. I try to do adding/subtracting with items around but I think she is a bit bored of it!
thanks in advance.

have you looked into other aspects than "number" as such to broaden her knowledge? National Curriculum areas also cover shape, weight, time, measuring - distances, volume and all the rest - I'm a sen teacher so possibly not the one to help, but why not make it all fun, bake cakes biscuits cookies and stuff, getting her to weigh the ingredients, get her a tape measure and start measuring things (and she'll come in handy when you need DIY doing as well) Also get her some "attribute blocks" and get her sorting items. You can also do this sort of thing with household objects and hoola hoops, make it all lots of fun because she will spend the next fifteen years writing it in class, imho they learn much more when things are active and enjoyable.

p.s. number bonds to ten is a good next step for the actual number work. 1+9 = 10, 2+8+10 etc - my ds1 learned it with shoes and boots and heaps of crap stuff on the floor...

Also the fabby multiplication tables songs, just stick to 2&4 x tables to begin with.

gigglewitch · 02/10/2009 21:58

oops. that should have said
1+9=10
2+8=10
3+7=10
etc

I would try some number games ict games

Also play card games and board games with her.

OK, you will probably despise this suggestion, but my dd (nearly 4) has got obsessed with The Numberjacks and it has done wonders for her numeracy. She has become a complete geek: counts up to 100, does addition and substraction in her head 'for fun', carries round a calculator, asks me to count numbers to put her to sleep...

It basically got her seeing numbers as characters and friends, and now we just play loads of number games through the day. She has no idea she's doing maths, she just sees it as having fun.

If only they did Letterjacks, I might get her reading...

Thanks everyone. Will definitely give some of those a try.
We bake all the time and have never thought of making the weighing etc fun - what a nice idea. Thanks for all the suggestions. Will try more games too.
(PS Hester, she's actually quite a fan of Numberjacks already and her reading all started with Fun With Phonics. Big fan of educational tv here!)

I just used malteasers/chocolate buttons. ds2 can eat as many as he can count and add. It worked immediately. I had to stop when he got to 16. he's 3.3yrs

kisses at bedtime. If I give you 4 kisses and you give me 6 how many kisses is that... How many kisses is it to make 10 altogether, etc.
