What are your thoughts on posters who don't have a gifted child but actively read this section (and usually take the piss )?

I think it's a bit wierd and sad. Why would you read sections like this if it wasn't relevant to you? And the poor souls must feel so bad about themselves to write derogatory comments (bless).

Can we make a unanimous decision to call RealityIsMyOnlyDelusion 'Reality' and not RIMOD? (which sounds like a Star Trek character or possibly something vaguely pornographic)...)

BoysAreLikeDogs · 19/04/2009 16:49

See, I've always suspected that the whole 'label the action not the child' thing was bollocks, and here it is, being misunderstood even in the G&T section...

I have a child who is on the G&T register, but not actually gifted in real terms, just quite brainy. May I actively read this section. And take the piss?

I think you have a right to have an opinion on the subject in any case. As it so happens I do have a gifted child (who has also incidentally been identified as G&T, which imo is no great sign of giftedness)- I also have another child who is struggling academically (but showing signs of catching up- so you never know.

I wouldn't need either of these to be a bit when my SIL found dn's every gurgle a sign of preternatural intelligence. He is now 11 and quite a bright little boy but he hasn't astonished the world yet.

Anyone who has experience of normal development in children is imho entitled to say, 'no that is just normal- a lot of them do that'. Or, 'being early with talking is no guarantee that you're going to be top of your class in Yr 7'.

stroppyknickers · 21/04/2009 09:30

I think that one of the reasons people find it easy to be rude about G and T is the title - we have special needs for struggling children at one end, and then Gifted and Talented for the other end - as if those in the middle are in no way gifted/ talented or in need of anything extra. Some schools don't actively run the G & T scheme, and my only experience of people with children identified as G and T has unfortunately been negative - very 'look at how wonderful my child is' so sadly, it's not neccessarily working in the best way to help genuinely beyond average children.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 21/04/2009 09:37

Lots of reasons to be interested other than having a gifted child.
Some people here were gifted children or had a family member who was, others work with G&T children.

Don't know about on here, but in RL the people I know who take the piss the most are generally the ex-gifted children themselves.

I used to write Star Trek porn in a past life......

I do find it puzzling that there are some topics where you are only allowed to agree with people, and any debate or questioning is called attacking and is treated accordingly. G and T is one, Home Ed is another. They are both areas where I have involvement, experience and opinions and where I have been bizarrely flamed for expressing my thoughts.
