LO is 6 but has a reading fluency and comprehension age of 12. I'm looking for chapter books/series to keep them going that are challenging but also age appropriate - I can't read everything to check content before they do as they devour books. TIA

I think older more traditional books. Swallows and Amazons, The Lion the witch and the wardrobe, Just William, Ballet Shoes, My Naughty Little Sister.

Thank you. I should have said, he has read all the classic childrens books. I was looking for a series he could do - he read Boxcar Children, Famous Five & SS.

If he liked the Blyton then Helen Moss has written a long series of contemporary adventure-style books that are very similar. If he isn’t easily scared and likes gothic tales, my DD liked the Lemony Snicket ones around that age (and there’s loads of them) — but they can be a bit gruesome so maybe not for an easily unsettled child!

DD also liked a series of books by David Farr called The Book of Stolen Dreams and the Adventures on Trains series by M G Leonard.

I would take dc to the library and let them choose.

but you could try How to Train Your Dragon; Percy Jackson; the first two Harry Potters

Also look out for Greek myths and Arabian Nights - I had child-friendly versions and I was enthralled by tales of ancient heroes and unlikely challenges

She doesn’t have to only read books at her reading/comprehension age. Remember she’s only 6, and has the emotional age of a 6 year old.

Thank you for these recomendations and book lists. Yes @CurlewKate he has and enjoys many picture books but for train rides, long car journeys & holidays I can't bring enough picture books to keep him going which is why I reached out for advice.

London Eye Mystery and Guggenheim mystery are both good. Robyn Stevens

Percy Jackson series

First 3 Harry Potters.

Kid Normal by Greg James

Dexter Proctor - about a ten year old child doctor / genius

How to Train Your dragon

Beast Quest (particularly if also mathsy)

The Maz Evans books e.g. Who let the Gods Out

Presume you've done the Treehouse / Tom Gates / Pamela Buchart series e.g. my headteacher is a Vampire Rat etc.

At that age, both DC read a lot of non fiction too.

We found teachers were REALLY helpful. It's important the VIPERS skills are there, as well as decoding, and the teachers were brilliant at suggesting books and discussing with the kids to make sure the comprehension was there too.

For long car trips, both DC really enjoyed a podcast from that age. Greeking Out, Homeschool history etc.
