My son has always been a very good reader, he was reading chapter books in Reception class. He's now in year 3 and out of curiosity I gave him an old yr6 SATS reading paper. He scored 120 which is the top score for a yr6. I knew he was ahead in reading but did not realise so much so. He reads several novels a week. Do I need to do anything or should he be accessing anything extra? I want to ask the school how he's being challenged but how do I go about it?

I think reading is the easiest thing to be ahead in. Mine is several years ahead too and it just means they can access a wider range of texts about anything they are interested in and working on. I haven’t pushed too hard for her to read the hardest texts she could as they would likely be inappropriate for her. Definitely discuss with teacher if you are worried your dc is bored but mine never was because she could easily extend her own learning. Lucky boy, as it gives them so much more ease with learning in all areas.

Just let him be exposed to a wide range of texts and find what he enjoys.

Agree that reading is easiest to be ahead in. So worth encouraging broader learner. Maths, Science etc

With reading, there's so many books out there that he has no reason to be bored or frustrated.
Just make reading material of all types available to him and encourage him to read widely and enrich his life.
Also make sure that he's not focussing on reading to the exclusion of other subjects, encourage him to be well-rounded and use his love of books to enhance other subjects.

Wow, that's impressive.

One of my DSs was a good reader at that age but I'd never thought about giving him a SATS paper to do in year 3!

The thing with being a good reader is that it does help in other subjects when they are older - history, geography, social sciences, even politics. THeir general knowledge gets much wider and they are generally good at writing.

Maybe encourage him to learn another language?
