Tottie32 · 18/09/2007 20:33

think i may talk to the teacher about her using one thnakyou

ShrinkingViolet · 18/09/2007 20:44

nad tilt the paper/book to a 45 degree angle, then the writing is above the hand. Also sitting so that you don't clash writing arms with a RH helps too (DD1 struggles a bit with those teachers who insist that everyone sits in alphabetical order becasue the boy she's sat next to in most classes for three years has a very pointy elbow, and they were never allowed to swap seats!)

I had an Osmiroid fountain pen with a left handed nib (squiggly at the end) and it helped my writing - with normal nibs I tended to tear into the paper and with normal ball pens I wear one side down faster than the other. But it depends how the left hander writes - some write with their hand folded round the paper so it is facing back towards their body.

cornsilk · 18/09/2007 20:48

Has anyone tried the left handed pencil?

bagpuss · 18/09/2007 20:49

Like QoQ, I can't say I've ever needed left handed anything. The pens do look interesting though. I am forever smudging things I write.

Yes.

I want a left handed ruler and a keyboard with the number pad on the left.

But you have to know how to use 'normal' stuff I think. To function...

silverfrog · 18/09/2007 22:39

I'm left-handed, and whilst I don't actualy need a left-handed pen, my writing is neater using one. I have a couple of yoropens around the place, and I find them a bit odd to hold tbh, but a good odd - I think if I'd had them earlier in life they would not feel as odd.

I got one for my dss (really atrocious writing) and there was a big improvement.

robinpud · 18/09/2007 22:48

Me, dh and ds are left handed. I love my lh scissors and my left handed potato peeler...

% of people lh is increasing- can't remember why

dayofftomorrow · 19/09/2007 10:10

part of it may be that they are allowing us to be left handed now, at our school (a few years ago now) the teachers had only just stopped forcing kids to use the right hand some of the older teachers still tried to get the left handed kids to change over.

MIL tried to get me to keep putting pencil and crayons into DS's right hand even though it was obvious right from the start that he would use left hand

we even had those odd chair/desk things that were designed for right hand use only

isgrassgreener · 25/09/2007 14:25

Suggest you buy a yoropen, they do pens and pencils (biro not ink) and can help any children who have problems with pencil grip.
They are very good for left handers, as the can see what they are writing, because the end of the pen is higher up.
Have made a huge difference for my left handed DS.
Can be bought in W H Smiths, on on line at www.yoropen.co.uk

NorthernRockCod · 25/09/2007 14:26

no
ds dint liek it

ahundredtimes · 25/09/2007 14:31

Gig - Would it be good for dyspraxsic ds2 do you think? The yoropen? He has trouble holding the pencil correctly.

NorthernRockCod · 25/09/2007 14:31

il post oyu mine

ahundredtimes · 25/09/2007 14:37

Oooh thank you. Will you?

Might work, mightn't it? He has a silly pencil that's meant to have grips but it's not all that good. This might do the trick.

NorthernRockCod · 25/09/2007 14:38

ahundredtimes - yes DS is dyslexic left hander as well.

hennipenni · 04/10/2007 23:14

My DDs wonderful teacher bought her a left handed pen to use in class. DD now loves her!

nappyaddict · 04/10/2007 23:25

i had to have a left handed pen cos at our school we had to write with a fountain pen and the nib was the wrong way around.

also had left handed folders and notepads cos i couldn't write on the paper whilst it was in there otherwise. i would have to take it out.

also had left handed scissors. some normal scissors i can use, some i can't. don't know why.

now left handed clocks and rulers are pointless.
