my DS started trumpet 2 years ago. i wonder weather to try French horn as he might be aiming for scholarship at 13+. Is trumpet a possibility for mus scholarship too vs French Horn?

I know you posted a few months ago but I'd suggest that your son continue with the trumpet if that's what he wants to play. If he has a burning desire to play French horn instead, go for it. It's a completely different fingering system from the trumpet and is played with the left hand instead of the right.

The French horn is a less common instrument than the trumpet but trumpet has the advantage of being in high demand as it is needed in orchestras, jazz, swing and concert bands as well as popular music. The French horn is generally considered to be less versatile.

Horn is definitely totally different. What does your child want to do? Mine had a music scholarship on horn and is now at a music school. Horn players are always needed but it's apparently very difficult to play.

Yes, if he’s good enough. It also depends on the sort of school you’re applying for: if there is only one music scholarship it may go to a child with a rarer instrument (or one who has been learning for the last 9 years rather than 2). But I know several boys from my son’s prep school who got 13+ music awards at senior schools on trumpet (plus piano plus voice).
