Okay folks - I am aware that I may be opening a can of worms here but why does this topic piss so many people off?

I mean if someone has deemed a child G+T (or is it G or T) why is it that they seem to be flamed when they post about any difficulties here?

If the label has come from outside the family and the family struggle why can't they post here saying "Help" without people leaping in to say "your child sounds normal to me"

For what it's worth I don't have a child labelled as G+T but am glad I don't given the response some posters get to this topic.

Surely it's okay for some children to be extra bright. Or is it that there is distrust of this label?

Just interested really.

o please. i'm probably just not clever enough to understand. haven;t got the talent. not a problem tho,

Kathyis6incheshigh · 14/09/2007 22:13

No-one is mocking the kids, Kerry.
If there is any mocking or condemnation it is directed at parents.

Lil · 14/09/2007 22:13

Kerrymum there isn't 'prejudice' against G+T kids. There's irritation with all the navel gazing.

So what if a kid is bright...what do they really want to do about it?? I can't see what they want for their children tas adults that's so different from anyone else on the site.

If its money, then you don't have to be G&T to earn big bucks.

ditto for fame, success or power

and if its just to be happy then you certainly don't have to be G&T there either.

Please explain..what do you want for your G&T child that's different?

PSCMUM · 14/09/2007 22:14

i haven;t read one post on here that is mocking the kids, just their parents for bragging about their kids.

cornsilk · 14/09/2007 22:19

What exactly are the problems faced by G + T chn? I keep seeing it on here. Can't think why it would be a problem to be G+T unless a child had additional special needs.

I haven't been poking fun Kerry - it was a serious question. Doesn't his teacher have extension work for him to do?

pointydog · 14/09/2007 22:22

Oh co,e on. who's poking fun at your son?

i am not insecure or inadequade i consider it crass

cornsilk · 14/09/2007 22:25

But if his needs are different then it's up to his class teacher to meet them. Surely that isn't impossible in Reception. It does get difficult when the child is functioning at a higher level than the teacher in a particular subject, which can happen.

PSCMUM · 14/09/2007 22:25

kerry mum, maybe you are not so G&T yourself or maybe you are missing the point on purpose - no one is piss taking becasue he is G&T. I was mocking people who moan about their child being G&T as if it is a genuine problem, when in fact it is an excuse to tell you what a genius their child is.

And what is a 'chess prodigy' if you don't mind me asking? could you have equally written 'really enjoys chess and is great at it' as it would have conveyed same meaning but you wouldn;t have sounded quite so arrogant! ... i think its much more important that when resources are limited children who are at the bottom of the ladder are brought up to the middle, rather than that chess prodigys etc are helped off the ladder up into the clouds, tho in an ideal world, i agree, there should be sufficient resources for both, but then we;d all need to pay higher taxes... i wouldn't mind that, but i don't think my views on tax are popular!

pointydog · 14/09/2007 22:26

I hae no feelings of inadequacy

Kerrymum as you know there are often 35 kids in a class these days. If the lesson if 45min, thats just over 1min per pupil. Although it is understandable that you want your child to be stretched, it is pretty unreasonable, and bloody near impossible.

The range of abilities in the average classroom is wide and there's no point blaming the schools or administration. I'm sure its frustrating for your son, but there are plenty of other kids getting a raw deal from schools and he is so blessed, because your kid will succeed whatever, and many who are average or worse won't.

So as others have said you may as well come on this site and complain you have too much money - you can't be surprised it is not going to be met with much sympathy...sorry!!

ok, i don't know what 'chess prodigy' means. Fact. So please tell me. Maybe my kids are it too but I don't know yet. I need something to moan about. Fact. You are getting on my nerves. Fact.

Anchovy · 14/09/2007 22:32

KM, no where on this thread or any of the other ones I have seen you on on this subject have I seen anyone poke fun at your child.

Time and time again people have said - not just to you, but also to you - "analyse what the problem is and then ask for specific suggestions". Wringing your hands about the status quo is not going to help things.

These threads seem to demonstrate (I only come and have a look because I keep seeing posts in active convos from people who I like) that there are a lot of very bright children - and a lot of formerly bright children - out there with a wealth of experience. Bemoaning brightness as a problem without really identifying what needs to be done is not going to unlock that helpful advice.

FWIW, being bored as a bright child comes with the territory of brightness, and can be a creative state, IMHO.

Lil · 14/09/2007 22:33

Why don't you put him up a year? [trying to be helpful] he'll learn to deal with the emotional side?
