I have a daughter who is 2years 3 months old she appears to be very bright and a quick learner.
She learnt her colours at 1 ½ including the different between light and dark verities of the colours
She can count to ten and identify numbers
She can read the words Faith, mum, dad, lily, Barry, josh, Lisa
She has just learnt how to wright mum.
She knows loads of nursery rhymes of by hart and has a concept of time and days.
Her speech is very clear and she has a massive vocamlarey.

Both myself and my wife are not particularly academic ( as you can tell by my spelling and grammar) and are starting to worry that we are not giving her the support with her learning that she need. She spends a lot of time with her 8 year old cousin and tends to isolate when around peers her own age. Should we be worried is he development normal.

She is 2, and so it is almost certainly far too early to know if she is gifted.

She sounds fab, and great fun, but atm just enjoy her and leave all the rest till later.

they all have very individual progression curves at this stage. At this stage my dd knew all the letters of the alphabet etc, now at 10 she is still sharp, but not outstanding (other than to me! )

yes those are unusual abilities at that age. Kids do all develop so differently.

If you do not see yourself as especially academic, I can understand why you are a bit concerned here.

I wouldn't worry TOO much about being unsociable around kids her own age. My dd is a bit like that-she is around the same age. At this age they still do a lot of parallel play, it is quite normal.

tbh, I'd be looking at whether she seems happy with her life atm, and doing fun things. For her that MIGHT be being read to, or whatever.

OTOH I don't think a kid this age NEEDS to be taught ANYTHING- they are like little sponges and will learn what they need.

twentypence · 04/09/2007 19:29

She sounds very bright, but normal. You are obviously giving her what she needs because she can do all these things.

Keep reading, singing and laughing with her and she will be fine.

And most 2 year olds don't play with each other - so she is normal in that regard as well.

I like that answer, Thanks. all she has learnt so far she has picked up herself we have not pushed her in anyway. but i was starting to wonder if i should try harder to teach her.

what is also very normal is to play much better with an older child

my 2.2 yo plays very complex imaginative games with her 4 yo brother, with me and with dp. And she instigates them.

BUT she will not play with kids her own age. I am not sure why.

I think ds was probably the same but jesus, it was nearly 2 years ago, who know?

Blandmum · 04/09/2007 19:31

nope, filly is right, , they really are little sponges!

Joining the library can be fun for them, but I wouldn't sweat it. If she is this good, you must be doing the right things, right?

berolina · 04/09/2007 19:33

She certainly sounds bright, but I'd be wary of sticking 'gifted' labels on 2yos. ds is the same age as her and can do a lot of what you list - don't think he can read, though what you refer to as reading is probably recognition of words as shapes iyswim. (This is not intended to rain on your parade btw, just to put things into context for you). Just enjoy her and let her enjoy herself. Yopu sound like you're doing all the 'right' things with/for her atm. Plenty of time until school - there is might, or then again mgiht not, become clear that she's understretched.

(P.S. Welcome to MN - if you want to post here more often, might be worth thinking up a catchier name! )

fillyjonk · 04/09/2007 19:38

(lol berol at "don't think he can read"

is he a NSB perchance?

I was SHOCKED the other day when dd started telling me what 1+1 was. I really hadn't noticed her even starting to count )

berolina · 04/09/2007 19:42

NKfffffffbc9637fdX114d1ada1f9 did you get your dd to help you sign up to Mumsnet?

NKffffffffbc9637fdX114d1ada1f9 · 04/09/2007 20:07

not sure why I have such a strange name, just got it with my confirmation e-mail.

gifted was the wrong word to use I know but needed to think of a subject title.

I realise that her reading is more shape recognition but its a start.

I guess the point of posting on here was to get some direction on how we can help her continue to develop but I did not really make that clear.

Faith is very happy, playful and confident around those she knows. .
