Gifted but dyslexic

My 7yr old ds is dyslexic and has been having private tutoring for it. His tutor has just told us that he is bordering gifted and as such we will struggle getting any help at school with the dyslexia as he is good at over coming it. Anyone got any experience of this?

My DS11 is a bit like this. Although his reading is fairly good, his writing (spelling & grammar not vocabulary) is about 2 years behind and has a number of dyslexic traits. I have also been told be a tutor that he would probably make G&T.He narrowly scraped a 4c for writing but got 5's for seaking, reading, maths and science. In fact science he got 96%

The school gave him a lot of extra help with spelling and I was told that the reason was because he was well above average. If the rest of his work was average then they would not have invested the the extra help in him to get his writing up to that level.

School have been saying he doesn't need help as he's coping. In my opinion coping isn't enough,i want him to achieve his full potential, whatever that may be.I've been told i will struggle getting a statement but can i insist on school applying for 1 and/or getting him seen by ed psych? My dd is statemented because she has special needs add etc but i have never had to fight for thayt so i'm unsure about the procedure.

Had exactly the same situation with DS1.

We started the statementing process as school wanted to wait until Yr5.
Statement was rejected.
We appealed.
It was rejected again.

Because he was average to above average in everything, he was not seen as a priority.

Well he's 7 in september so they can't fob me off with the age thing now. Guess i'll have to take a copy of the report to school and see what they say. Makes me so cross that average is seen as enough when a child could do so much more. Surely it's a schools responsibilty to help all children achive their potential, whatever that is. I'm not a pushy parent,he loves learning and i want him to do the best he can.

I've just started on a mission to get ds (10) statemented although I know realistically that I won't get anywhere. All of the hard work he's put in means he can "access the curriculum". My concern is secondary school - he's unlikely to pass 11 plus (takes ages to do some of the verbal tests) and I'm not sure local boys' grammar would be right. Comprehensive with dyslexia unit won't give him support as he's not "bad" enough. He's on a real downer at the moment as his 2 older sisters find academic work easy and thinks he's dumb. He's far from dumb.
It's incredibly frustrating. So many children are losing out because they are managing and achieving the average when they have the potential to do better. I'm giving up (despite having retrained as a specialist dyslexia teacher with Dyslexia Action) and have decided from speaking to friends with older dyslexic children who've achieved well that private education's our only choice.

If i could afford it i would send him to a private school but it just isn't possible. At least i know he is dyslexic and his tutor (who is a good friend)is doing it for free. Sucks that we shoulod have to pay though.

Ds3 is quite dyslexic, and very bright - maths score in top 2% of population, spelling in bottom 4%!!. However he is at a private school who have been fab with extra support and help, have not applied for a statement although he does have an IEP. Improvement is already massive, at the start of Y3 he was off the scale bad for spelling and reading, now average (50%) score for reading, and spelling much improved (though still a long way to go)
