Watching DVD's at school. I feel a bit bemused by this

It's not ususual for dt's (reception) to mention having watched a dvd (or part of one)at school.

I thought maybe this was just during a wet playtime maybe but dd said they watched a bit of one today and that they're watching part of it everyday. It's a film I took them to the cinema to see.

I don't mind the dvd, but when they keep pushing extra work that we must do with them at home, I feel a bit about it. I feel that homework at 4/5 is too much but that's just a pov and we do do it.

Haven't said anything and don't know if I should - it might sound a bit picky of me. Does this happen at other schools?

In some cases, Aloha, watching the film inspires children to read books that they might not otherwise have bothered with.

Y5s at my school do a literacy fortnight based on 'Goodnight Mister Tom' which uses both book (although only small sections) and film. This is always popular and many children go on to borrow the book (and others by the same author) from the library.

Yes I suppose that is possible amateurmum.

Thanks you all for your thoughts. I have no real reason to be too critical, I think the school is good. you can get a very convoluted view of what is going on if you ask children. 'We watched a dvd' isn't really likely to be the whole story I guess!

Lol Aloha! He had a point lets face it

Also sorry about 'webb' it's 'web' isn't it? Maybe I need some literacy lessons

There are loads of good reading and writing lessons you can do around Charlotte's Web and watching a film version can highlight some techniques very successfully. I assume they are using it to focus on characterisation, setting, pathetic fallacy etc.

Not necessarily a big skive. But hey, maybe it is. Ask teh teacher.
