Posted this on the end of Were you G&T with no response, but I would like your opinion - pretty please!

My dd (year 6) has just been classified G+T for her ability & potential in sport. Is this a naff classification in your opinion? Should I take it seriously? I've never heard of a phys ed T&G child. I have a feeling the government are clutching at straws for the forthcoming Olympics in 2012, as DD will be prime age by then. My family & friends don't seem to be that bothered by the news and I'm not sure if I should be or not? Help! She's been invited to Junior Athlete Education day which will be practical and theory and it all seems to be really exciting, but I can't help thinking its a 'white elephant'. What do you think?

Martian Bishop: ?G and T is supposed to pick up the generaly very clever....the gifted bit. But it is also supposed to pick up the Tallented....those children who are excepetional at one part of the curriculum. So classicaly this could be kids who are exceptional at sport, or art, or music or a single 'academic' subject.?

Duff gen (from a teacher!). The Dfes definition is:

?Gifted and talented children are those who have one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop these abilities).
In England the term 'gifted' refers to those pupils who are capable of excelling in academic subjects such as English or History. 'Talented' refers to those pupils who may excel in areas requiring visio-spatial skills or practical abilities, such as in games and PE, drama, or art.?

In a normal private school there will be children who are brilliant at sport and in the teams and running for the county etc like my daughter and occasionally in English teams for their age group. In those kinds of schools they wouldn't get a label and you obviously hope they'll be good at their academic work too. In fact the more sport children do the better they can be at other thigns I often think - fit in body and mind so I would always encourage children as much as possible with all sports. It wlil also help with university entrance if they have a brilliant CV full of sporting achievements too and give her huge pleasure over her whole life.

My dd was put into the G&T selection at her school for dance, ours is a Sports Status Secondary school and they do a G&T list each year. I was just abit cross as i know she is talented dances in the world championships etc., but she doesn't actually do dance at school. Yet they are using her name to put to the education authority as one of 'their' gifted and talented.

Just to add, SueW i know how you feel about waiting around whilst kids do activities! My dd does dance everynight of the week and sometimes i myself feel exhausted. But she loves it and if it keeps her busy and off the street...then great!!
