Grammar or outstanding comp for G& T?

My dd is more on talented range not gifted. Very bright exceeding expectations in everything consistently every year at Primary school. I'm considering grammar school rather than selective private school as well can't afford the latter.

However we have an outstanding ofsted comp on our doorstep. Moving to grammar would mean moving house.

How many of you parents would opt for grammar if you could for your dd or ds if very bright? I'm not sure about bright child would do well anywhere given the environment. Thoughts?

In term of success rate, which one do you think has a better chance to enter Oxbridge? Comprehensive or Grammar?

I would suggest you look up detailed analyses of Oxbridge admissions.

Of course grammar schools get a higher percentage of their students into Oxbridge than comprehensives, as they are more selective on entrance. There is little to no evidence that a high ability pupil from a grammar is more likely to get a place than a high ability pupil from a high achieving comprehensive.

Actually, the very selective grammars are surprisingly unsuccessful at getting pupils into Oxbridge, given how selective they are at 11 and 16. For example, schools like Henrietta Barnett are massively over-subscribed, some of the most selective schools in the country, and yet get "only" around 15% into Oxbridge. (Indicating that selection at 11 is very flawed.)

I'm Oxbridge educated. I personally would choose the catchment comprehensive for my own DC over the nearest grammar. But I would be honest enough to admit that I wouldn't choose a comprehensive with few high achievers.

user7214743615 Thank you for your contribution. So here's a real stat for you. Just 3 our of a class of 30 that's 10% are what I'd class as 'high achievers' in my local boys comp. The 3 would probably get straight As or mix of As and Bs. The comp set 2 students to Oxbridge over last 5 years. Enrichment is very limited too. Would you choose this comp? It's a good rated Ofsted comp.

I have the option of moving to a grammar or buying a private school place if we can pass (top 20 indie in the country). I'd be interested in your thoughts :)
