Hi everyone, DS1 (8) told me he was going on a Maths Roadshow yesterday with school, I didn't pay much attention and we couldn't find the permission form (totally disorganised atm) so I scribbled a quick note to his teacher yesterday saying he could go etc...
Anyway, today I found the letter with the permission slip and it says 'Excellence in Cities: Gifted and talented strand' and it was the Millenium Maths Roadshow. DS says that 4 from his year and 4 from the year above went in a taxi - I thought it was a class trip. He really enjoyed it.
So does this mean DS1 is G&T?, school haven't mentioned anything and obviously I am so not a pushy parent, I've been more worried about his handwriting as he's a leftie!
If anyone can enlighten me, I'd appreciate it!

Hiya Bubblerock!

I would assume they consider he is! I seem to remember hearing on the news a few weeks back that schools were being told by government that the top 10% of pupils for a subject are to be considered gifted and talented, and that more funding was going to be made available to provide opportunities for these children. Have you asked him how/why he was chosen to go?

Hi Sparkymummy - I just asked him why he was chosen and he said 'because I'm the best at maths' - not too big headed there then! lol - he definately did not get it from me, I really struggled with maths at school.

It's a government initiative - just as under achievers have the right to have their educational needs met, over acheivers have the right to have their needs met too. My DS is G&T in both literacy and maths. I got a letter home telling me this, but I had to Google it to actually find out what it meant.

So is this what is going on with my dd1 in Y2?

They haven't said anything to me, I just manage to get her to tell me about her day once in a while and it turns out she is being taken off with others, who I noticed are also doing well, by the deputy head, for different (dd says fun) lessons.

Hurrah!
