Suggesting LO be more challenged?

Hi, I'm completely new to this forum and would really like to ask your advice. The school recently told us that my LO has a reading and spelling age well above her own (reading age over double). She finds both literacy and maths work easy and we've broached the subject with her current teacher. I'm happy to wait again and see what happens, but I also wondered if it would be completely unwise to bring up the possibility of attending the year ahead's literacy lesson - only if the teachers feels it might be appropriate? I really want to work with the school and equally I would love my LO to be challenged too. Has anyone had any recent similar experiences or any advice on what to do? Thanks so much for your help.

Geraniumred, can you please give us some ideas about what you do with G&T KS2 group?

My DS isn't G&T in literacy, but would like to know how I can extend his ability in literacy.

Have a look at 'Jumpstart Literacy' by Pie Corbett - I get all my best ideas from there. I also have the 'Jumpstart Grammar' and 'Jumpstart Storywriting' but the literacy one is the most useful. I work in slots of 40 minutes and we usually do a different activity each week. You can easily do some of them with just one child - I often trial them on my own dd who would be in a G and T group if they had one at her school and in that instance I write alongside her.
At school we might look at different forms of poetry like Kennings and Limericks and write our own - see 'What Rhymes with Sneeze' for some fun ideas. With older Key Stage 2 I might introduce them to more classical poetry forms such as a sonnet, ballad and Haiku. Sometimes we will use a part of a book as a springboard for writing.
What I try hard to do is to demonstrate a wide variety of styles of writing. Poetry fits in well to a small time-frame so it is a particular favorite of mine.
