Hv has always said ds was very advanced but has speech probs so I sort of dismissed it as her being nice. However had a conversation today with a friend about her DD who is nearly 6 and DS who is 3 next week. He is eager to learn and some of things I said he can do she said are above average for her dds age group[she also has a ds about 6wks younger than my ds] He is my eldest so have no idea what is the norm.

What difference would it make if he were?

Honestly, I would laugh it off and forget it- maybe he is "advanced" in certain areas, maybe her dd is "behind"- they are all different.

Forget the whole G+T thing for now- it is a relatively recent thing brought in to make sure that high-achieving children IN SCHOOLS aren't ignored for lack of identification/ funding. Previously a lot of attention was directed to children with low achievements- to the exclusion of those at the other end of the spectrum.

Nemo - give up, you won't get anything but abuse love, go and find to people who know what they are talking about.

tissy · 03/10/2006 12:00

Hideehi, I hope you weren't suggesting that my post was abusive

Someone on another thread mentioned that there was an "unanswered threads" button, which I had never noticed before- I ran down the list and found one I felt I could comment on- that is all.

Nemo's ds is nearly 3- he may be bright, he may be a genius, but he is a baby still. Let him be a baby for a bit longer.

SenoraPostrophe · 03/10/2006 12:04

agree with tissy - and also agree that her post wasn't abusive.

TutterIckOrTreat · 03/10/2006 12:06

hideehi - what a ridiculous post

lol

you know if your child is G&T if he/she gets bored at school apparently

tissy · 03/10/2006 12:09

maybe this site will give Nemo some more information.

Hidehi- I think it is extremely patronising of you to suggest that no-one on here knows what they're talking about- I have seen many posts by people who consider their kids to be gifted. Sure there are some people who get riled by the whole "my child's a genius" idea- but they have just as much right to post as you.

I started a thread yesterday, as I was worried that my 4 year old's homework wasn't hard enough . A teacher (amongst others) rightly commented that she was too young for homework. Fair enough!

eek didnt mean to cause a row..

I am not asking in a sense ot push him either way was just wondering genuinely how you know if they are..is it something the school picks up on or someone else???

To be fair, HiDeeHi was rather pounced on yesterday when posting on this topic. She may still feel a little bruised....

foxinsocks · 03/10/2006 14:43

snort at enid

school is the best bet really as they see so many children, they have a better idea as to whether a child is well above the average

MrsScareyFish · 03/10/2006 14:43

yes and they cry of boredom
god

cod step a way

yep school
I knew ds was pretty "advanced" as a toddler but gave it little thought. At school it became a bigger issue but G+T provision is pretty patchy at best, so just encourage your ds to enjoy and embrace all things and when he starts school he will inevitably float up to the teachers attention if he is exceptionally able

livelife · 03/10/2006 16:02

blimey bit of a thing going on here? thought i'd take a little peek at this section for first time cos not really interested in g&t. but...ds always been good at maths stuff. doing complicated puzzles really early was first sign looking back. also he could do older sisters mental maths whilst still 2. he got 100% in maths SATS this year. but i'm doing nothing with it, the school can do it (a normal comp) if he's that way inclined he'll do it himself without me interfering and i grew up where its not good to be too clever. he is normal boy not a geek and thats how its gotta stay. dd did english gcse a year early got A and A*. same with her. dd2 knew all her letters and could read at 3 but it meant nothing for how she continued as she struggles with writing and spelling etc and is mild dyslexic (great at german tho strangley!). dd3 spoke really early and was v bright toddler but is utterly average at everything at school. they develop and learn at different paces for different things. most important thing of all is are they nice loving caring people? sorry about the sermon, here endeth the lesson

GoingQuietlyMad · 04/10/2006 14:46

It's a really difficult topic to raise. On the one hand, there's the "every parent thinks their child is a genius" thing that makes you think that you could be imagining it. on the other hand no-one wants to let their children down if they have got great potential academically.

I think the most sensible thing is that the school will probably identify if the child is gifted. What more can you do except go at the child's pace, and if that is faster, follow it.

mumof3teens · 04/10/2006 23:03

Got to agree with Livelife - let them get on with it unless the school is particularly bad. DS1 member of Mensa, DS2 & DS3 both members of NAGTY. DS2 & DS3 both identified as G & T and members of NAGTY. DS1 got 5 x grade A "A" levels. All went/go to state comp and were/are happy there. Didn't do anything extra with them. Primary school books - had to go through ALL books despite them being "easy", they just read other books they chose themselves at the library as well.
